It is that time of year again: time for the Marvellous Market Bag Crochet Along!

Welcome to the fifth annual Marvellous Market Bag Crochet Along on Rich Textures Crochet! This time of year I always find myself gravitating to more summer like yarns including cotton. And I see the question so often in Facebook groups, “What can I make with cotton yarn other than dish cloths?” Well, I’m here to tell you: Market Bags!

I love making crochet market bags. They are practical, can be used around my own home or gifted. They can be statement pieces! When I take them to the market or park, they are always noticed and commented on by those around me. They are pretty and unique.

Every year this is such a fun crochet along! Market bags are fairly quick to make and this year you’re going to find they work up even more quickly as they are all a mesh or open work design! Being worked in more open stitches also means that they are not going to need as much yarn as some of the bags in years past.

Past Crochet Market Bag Crochet Alongs:

As mentioned above this is the fifth crochet market bag crochet along that I will have hosted here on Rich Textures Crochet. Each year it seems like there is one bag that stands out in popularity from the rest, so I would like to share those with you!

First, the Crisscross Market Bag was a favourite for many in the first market bag crochet along. This bag is fairly easy to work and features the fun crossed treble stitch. The bag has lots of stretch and is roomy!

Next, just recently I saw some beautiful photos of a crocheters completed Promenade Market Bag. This is another market bag with a fun zigzag design.

The Rosemary Market Bag was one of my favourite bags. This bag features lots of texture with front and back post stitches and was a great bag to use those cotton scraps on.

Finally, if you are looking for a market bag that features some fun and textured crochet stitches, you may wish to check out the Summertime Market Bag from the crochet along last year! You will love using the fur stitch to make an impact!

The 2024 Marvellous Market Bag Crochet Along!

Well, that’s enough about the past years, lets take about the bags for this years crochet along!

How it works:

Beginning May 1st, 2024 I will release one new crochet market bag pattern each week for five weeks.  The patterns (including the written and video tutorials) will be posted on the Wednesdays at 9am EST.

The schedule will be as follows:

  • Wednesday, May 1st: Sweetheart Market Bag
  • Wednesday, May 8th: Stormy Day Market Bag
  • Wednesday, May 15th: Sunny Day Market Bag
  • Wednesday, May 22nd: Raindrop Market Bag
  • Wednesday, May 29th: Blue Sky Market Bag

The patterns will be posted FOR FREE in written form here on my website and a full video tutorial will also be posted here and to my YouTube channel.  As well each week, for those who wish, I will make a PDF available that can be purchased from my Etsy and Ravelry Shops.  All of the patterns will be free to follow here on my website and YouTube Channel and will forever remain free here even after the crochet along has ended.

The Patterns:

Each crochet market bag features a similar construction and is worked as one piece from the bottom and into the continuous handles.  Each of the bags this year are worked in basic crochet stitches including single and double crochet stitches. All of the bags are classified as easy crochet patterns making them great for both the beginner and intermediate crocheter.

Each bag is worked from the bottom up and I have worked each one in a single colour. But don’t hesitate to add your own creative flare and switch the colours up a bit! Once again, if you have some cotton scraps lying around, this is a great way to use them!

The Materials:

To work the market bags you will need a 4 mm (G/6) crochet hook. I will be using a Clover Soft Touch Crochet Hook that I purchased from Lion Brand.

Each of the crochet market bags is worked in a 100% worsted weight cotton yarn. I will be using the 24/7 Cotton by Lion Brand (Lion Brand®; 186 yds/170m; 3.5 oz/100g; 100% cotton; medium/worsted weight). However you can use a worsted weight cotton of your choice. Another option would be the Bernat Handicrafter Cotton by Yarnspirations or the Pima Cotton also by Lion Brand.

For each bag you will need approximately 370-450 yards of yarn. I used the following colours for my bags:

  • Week One: Denim
  • Week Two: Silver
  • Week Three: Lemon
  • Week Four: Aqua
  • Week Five: Sky

Along with your yarn and hook you will also need a pair of scissors and a yarn needle for finishing off.
