Welcome to week five of the Spring Blossom Throw Crochet Along! Today we will make an afghan square using the small daisy stitch.

The small daisy stitch is a fun stitch to work once you get the hang of it.  I will confess though, for some, this may be the most complicated of the stitches used in this crochet afghan.  So if you are having difficulty, be sure to check out the video tutorial below.

The good news about this crochet stitch design is that it is a one row repeat.  You will use the first row to set up your small daisy stitches, and then the second row is the only row repeated throughout the pattern.

The small daisy stitch is constructed in a similar way to many of the other star stitch designs, such as your Trinity Stitch (Learn on YouTube).  It is made up of spike stitches and worked in 3 easy steps.

To work the small daisy stitch, you will begin by inserting your hook into the chain stitch that closes the previous daisy.  Yarn over and draw up a loop.  Then insert your hook into the same stitch as the last spike of the previous daisy, yarn over and draw up a loop.  Skip the next chain and insert your hook into the next stitch.  Yarn over and draw up a loop.  Yarn over one more time and draw through all four loops on your hook.

Go ahead and try it in the pattern below! And if you’d like a video tutorial simply focused on the stitch itself, check out this one too: How to Crochet the Small Daisy Stitch.

The square this week features a pretty and lacy stitch pattern called the petal stitch.  It is a lacy design, however it is one that is quite stable, made up of shell stitches interspersed between rows of chains and single crochet stitches.  The shells are worked using four triple/treble crochet stitches.
