The Wide Herringbone Stitch pattern is a striking crochet stitch pattern featuring a backing of double crochet mesh, and an arrowhead design of long chains along the front.

The stitch does take a few foundation rows to get the pattern set up, but once it is, the pattern is only a two row repeat.  The final fabric is not quite solid in nature and all of the texture is to one side.  It would create a neat effect used alongside a most solid pattern in a blanket, possibly even on its own.  This wide herringbone stitch would be fun to play around with!

Materials for this Tutorial:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Pima Cotton Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn. It is a worsted weight yarn. The hook shown in the video below is a 5 mm birchwood crochet hook by Rowan Yarns.  However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose.

Thank you so much for stopping by! If you enjoy the tutorial below, be sure to also check out some of the many other crochet stitch tutorials on my site and pin this for later! You may wish to start with the Mood Stitch | How to Crochet.

The Wide Herringbone Crochet Stitch:

Abbreviations:

Ch – Chain

Dc – Double Crochet

Hdc – Half Double Crochet

Rpt – Repeat

Sc – Single Crochet

Sk – Skip

Sl St – Slip Stitch

Yo – Yarn Over

Notes:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial.  You may work the stitch in one colour or many.  I will be working the design in a solid colour.

To begin, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains.  For this stitch pattern you will need a multiple of ten stitches plus two stitches for your foundation chain (multiples of 10+1).

For example, ch 22.

Row One:

Sc in the 2nd ch from your hook, *ch 1, sk the next st, sc in the next st; Rpt from * across, ch 1, turn.

Row Two:

Sc in the 1st st, *ch 1, sk the next ch-1 sp, sc in the next st; Rpt from * across, ch 1, turn.

Row Three:

Sc in the 1st st, *ch 5, [sk the next ch-1 sp, sc] twice, working in front of the ch sp, sl st in the ch sp 2 rows below, ch 5, [sk the next sc, sk the next ch-sp] twice, sc in the next sc; Rpt from * across, ch 1, turn.

Row Four:

Sc in the 1st sc, *[ch 1, sk the next ch-1 sp, working in front of the ch-5 below, dc in the next sc 2 rows below] 4 times, ch 1, sk the next sl st, sc in the next sc; Rpt from * across, ch 1, turn.

Row Five:

Sc in the 1st st, * ch 5, [sk the next ch-1 sp, sk the next dc] twice, working in front of the next ch-1 sp, sl st in the next ch-1 sp 2 rows below, ch 5, [sk the next sc, sk the next ch-1 sp] twice, sc in the next sc; Rpt from * across, ch 1, turn.

Row Six:

Sc in the 1st st, *[ch 1, sk the next ch-1 sp, working in front of the ch-5 below, dc in the next sc 2 rows below] 4 times, ch 1, sk the next sl st, sc in the next sc; Rpt from * across, ch 1, turn.

And that’s it!

Now for the rest of the pattern you will repeat rows five and six for the pattern.  Fasten off, weave in your ends.
