If you are looking for a dense and thick crochet stitch pattern, this uniquely worked Treads crochet stitch might just be the right one for you!

The Treads crochet stitch is a wonderfully easy crochet stitch to work. It is a one row repeat that shows its texture off on both sides. This does make it great for reversible projects. But be aware as the stitch is quite dense, it would take a while to create a larger project with it such as a blanket. The resulting fabric is also quite heavy, but it is beautiful!

To create the stitch pattern you will essentially be working single crochet two stitches together, but in reverse. This reversal of the stitch is what gives it its unique look. You will get a better sense of this technique in the free video tutorial below.

    Materials for this Tutorial:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of the Basic Stitch Anti Pilling yarn by Lion Brand. It is a soft worsted weight 100% acrylic yarn. The hook shown in the video below is a 5 mm Birchwood Crochet Hook by Rowan Yarn – one of my favourites!  However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose.

Thank you so much for stopping by! If you enjoy the tutorial below, be sure to also check out some of the many other crochet stitch tutorials on my site and pin this for later! You may wish to start with the Twin Stitch | How to Crochet.

    Crochet Treads Stitch:

    Stitches and Abbreviations:

    Ch – Chain Stitch
    Rpt – Repeat
Rsc2tog – Reverse Single Crochet Two Stitches Together (Insert hook into the next st, yarn over and draw up a loop, insert hook into the previous st, yarn over and draw up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on your hook. Reverse Single Crochet Two Together made).
    Sc – Single Crochet Stitch
    Sl St – Slip Stitch
    Yo – Yarn Over

    Pattern Notes:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial and it may be worked in one colour or many. I will be working this pattern in a solid colour.

To begin make a slip knot and make a foundation chain. For this stitch you will need an even number of stitches for your foundation chain.

    For example, ch 32.

    Row One:

Sc in the 3rd ch from your hook, sc in each st across. Ch 2, turn.

    Row Two:

Beginning in the next st, work rsc2tog (see “Stitches and Abbreviations”) all the way across to the final ch-2 sp, sc in final ch-2 sp. Ch 2, turn.

    And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern simply repeat row two for as long as you would like. Fasten off, weave in your ends.
