With the Spiked Knotted Half Double Crochet you are going to create a thick, double sided texture that is great for those thicker projects that don’t require too much drape!
Over the past few weeks I have published two variations of the Knotted Half Double Crochet stitch pattern. The first used half double crochet two together stitches that are worked beginning in the same stitch as the previous and the second pattern replaced them with yarn over slip stitches that resulted in a fabric that was a little less thick with a slightly different look.
In the Spiked Knotted Half double crochet we are going to take the first pattern and work some of those stitches as spike stitches to create even more texture!

What is a Spike Stitch:
In this crochet pattern we will work Spiked Half Double Crochet two together stitches. Spiked stitches are crochet stitches that are worked OVER the previous row and into the spaces below the row. In this stitch pattern we will only work over the previous row, but in other crochet patterns a spike stitch may be worked over more and deeper into the fabric.

The Materials:
For this tutorial today, I will be using a small amount of Heatherly by KnitPicks and WeCrochet in a single colour. It is a medium/worsted weight yarn that is a wool blend. Along with my worsted weight yarn, I will also be working with a 5 mm (H/8) crochet hook.

Pattern Notes:
This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial and it may be worked in one colour or many. I will be working this pattern in a single colour.
This pattern is written in American crochet terms.
To begin, make a slip knot and make a foundation chain. For this stitch, you may use any number of stitches for your foundation chain.
For example, ch 21.
Row One:
Sc in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each st across. Ch 1, turn.
Row Two:
Sc in the 1st st, sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn.
Row Three:
Sc in the first st, spiked hdc2tog over the next 2 sts, *spiked hdc2tog starting in same as the last st; Rpt from * across until no sts remaining, hdc in the final st (which is the same as the last), ch 1 turn.
Row Four:
Sc in the 1st st and in each st across. Ch 1, turn.
And that’s it!
For the remainder of the pattern simply repeat rows two and three. Fasten off, weave in your ends.
