I love the texture and design in the Raven Claw Crochet Stitch.  It features a beautiful solid texture that is similar to the Triad Stitch, but a little more dense.

I have worked the Raven Claw stitch in two different colours.  The pattern works wonderfully switching colours every two rows.  The colour changes really make the raven claw stitches stand out.  I found it easiest to alternate between colours every two rows.  The stitch would also look wonderful in a solid colour.  Use this stitch in a variety of crochet patterns, colours and yarn weights.  It has no limits!

Materials for this Tutorial:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Pima Cotton Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn in one colour. It is a worsted weight, 100% cotton yarn. The hook shown in the video below is a 5 mm birchwood crochet hook by Rowan Yarns.  However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose, even experiment with stripes of colour!

Notes:

  • Pattern is written in American English terms
  • Weave in ends as needed
  • This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial.

To begin you will make a foundation chain.  For this pattern you will need a multiple of three stitches plus two chains for your foundation chain (3+2).

For example, with colour A, ch 32.

Row One:

Sc in the 3rd ch, sc in each ch across.  Ch 3, turn.

Row Two:

Rc beginning in the 1st st, *ch 1, rc in each st across beginning each st in the same st as the previous rc is worked; Rpt from * across, dc in final ch-2 sp.  Switch to colour B in the final st, ch 1, turn.

Row Three:

With colour B, sc in the 1st st and in each st across.  Ch 3, turn.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern simply repeat rows two and three alternating between your two colours every two rows.  Fasten off, weave in your ends.
