Working crochet hats, like this Aspen Beanie crochet pattern, in a super bulky weight yarn makes them quick to crochet and super warm!

I really enjoy wearing crochet hats that are worked in a super bulky weight yarn. Many times they only require one ball of yarn and they are so warm and cozy to wear!

The Aspen Beanie crochet pattern is an easy to work design that is worked side to side in rows. I like using this method to make crochet hats because, not only is it easy, but it is also easy to adjust the size. All you need to do is work the foundation chain to the length you require, and then work the repeats in the pattern until it reaches the desired circumference.

To make it easier to close the top of the hat, I work into a chain loop at the top end which makes it easier to gather together. I’ve used this technique most recently in the wonderful Cameron Beanie.

The Aspen Beanie crochet pattern looks as though it has been knit. The ribbing in the hat makes for a snug final product.

The Materials:

I mentioned above that this beanie can be made in an hour or less! The main reason for this is that it is made using a super bulky weight yarn.  For my samples I have used the Wool Ease Thick & Quick yarn by Lion Brand.  This is one of my favourite wool blend yarns.  It is super cozy and still has some of the warmth of wool.  Along with the super bulky weight yarn I have used a 10mm crochet hook such as this streamline metal one by Furls Crochet.

From the ring, ch 21.

Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from your hook, hsc (see “Stitches and Abbreviations) in the next st and in each of the remaining stitches.  Slip stitch into the ch-8 loop, ch 1, turn. (20 sts)

Fold your hat so that the ch-8 loop is at the top and both sides of the hat meet.  Join your two long sides together by working through both thickness and in the blo of each side all the way across, sl st in each st across. Fasten off, weave in your ends.

Take a piece of yarn and sew the top of the hat closed.  Once again fasten off and weave in any ends.
