The Popcorn Stitch is one of those fabulous classic crochet stitches and should be in everyone’s crochet repertoire!

It is one that features a lot of texture and can be used to create a solid block of texture as I am going to work in this tutorial, or you may also wish to slip the individual popcorn stitches up and add an occasional popcorn for a pop of texture in a larger project.  There are so many opportunities with this stitch! I’ve used it in everything from beanies (Such as this Paired Up Toque and Neck Warmer Free Crochet Pattern) to blankets.  It’s so much fun!

The Popcorn crochet stitch worked in pink yarn

Materials for this Tutorial:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Pima Cotton Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn. It is a worsted weight yarn. The hook shown in the video below is a 5 mm crochet hook by Rowan Yarns (I purchased mine from Fleece and Harmony).  However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose.

Thank you so much for stopping by! If you enjoy the tutorial below, be sure to also check out some of the many other crochet stitch tutorials on my site and pin this for later! You may wish to start with the beautiful Wide Bead Stitch | How to Crochet.

The Popcorn Crochet Stitch

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial.

To begin, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains.  For this stitch pattern you will need an even multiple of stitches for your foundation chain.

Row One:

Single Crochet into the second chain from your hook and into each chain stitch across.  Chain one and turn your work.

Row Two:

Single crochet into the first stitch, * popcorn into the next stitch, single crochet into the next stitch.

To make a popcorn stitch, work five double crochet stitches all into the same stitch.  Remove your hook from your loop, insert your hook through the top of the first double crochet stitch in the set and reach across to the loop previously removed from your hook, place it on your hook and draw it through the top of the first double crochet stitch.  Popcorn stitch is made.

Repeat from * across, chain one and turn.

Row Three:

Single crochet into the first stitch and in each stitch across, chain one and turn your work.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern, simply repeat rows two and three for as long as you would like, fasten off and weave in your ends.
