This wonderful Open Weave Crochet Stitch is easy and quick to work up.  It’s open fabric looks like it has been woven.

And when this stitch is worked in multiple colours as I do in this tutorial below, it gives off a wonderful plaid vibe.  The fabric is not solid by any means, but it is similar on both sides.  This makes it a great candidate for a variety of projects such as shawls, blankets and market bags – some of my favourite!

A crochet fabric in green and grey yarn that looks like it is woven

Although the pattern looks complicated, it is surprisingly easy being worked in double crochet, single crochet and chain stitches.  You will see exactly what I mean in the video tutorial below!

Materials for this Tutorial:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Pima Cotton Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn. It is a worsted weight yarn. The hook shown in the video below is a 5 mm birchwood crochet hook by Rowan Yarns.  However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose.

The Open Weave Crochet Stitch:

Abbreviations:

Ch – Chain

Dc – Double Crochet

Hdc – Half Double Crochet

Rpt – Repeat

Sc – Single Crochet

Sk – Skip

Sl St – Slip Stitch

Yo – Yarn Over

Notes:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial.  You may work the stitch in one colour or many.  I will be working the design in two colours: A, B.

To begin, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains.  For this stitch pattern you will need a multiple of ten stitches for your foundation chain plus nine (multiples of 10 + 9).

For example, with colour A, ch 29.

Row One:

Dc in the 4th ch from your hook, *ch 3, sk the next 3 chs, dc in each of the next 2 sts; Rpt from * across switching to colour B in the final st.  Ch 1, turn.

Row Two:

With colour B, sc in each of the 1st 2 sts, *ch 1, dc working in front of the ch-3 and into the 2nd st of the 3 sk chs 2 rows below, ch 1, sc in each of the next 2 dc, ch 1, dc working in behind the ch-3 and into the 2nd st of the 3 sk chs 2 rows below, ch 1, sc in each of the next 2 dc; rpt from * across, sc in each of the final 2 sts.  Do not turn, drop colour B and pick up colour A at the start of row 2.

Row Three:

With colour A (working in the same direction as the previous row), ch 3 (counts as a dc), dc in the next sc, *ch 3, sk the next 3 sts, dc in each of the next 2 sc; Rpt from * across, pick up colour B in the final st.  Ch 1, turn.

Row Four:

With colour B, sc in each of the 1st 2 sts, *ch 1, dc working in front of the ch-3 and into the dc 2 rows below, ch 1, sc in each of the next 2 dc, ch 1, dc working in behind the ch-3 and into the dc 2 rows below, ch 1, sc in each of the next 2 dc; rpt from * across, sc in each of the final 2 sts.  Do not turn, drop colour B and pick up colour A at the start of row 2.

Row Five:

With colour A, (working in the same direction as the previous row), ch 3 (counts as a dc), dc in the next sc, *ch 3, sk the next 3 sts, dc in each of the next 2 sc; Rpt from * across, pick up colour B in the final st.  Ch 1, turn.

And That’s it!

For the rest of the pattern, repeat rows 2-5.  Fasten off and weave in your ends.

  1. I’d like to decrease stitches in some of these rows – how can I do this with this type of stitch?
