The Alternative Double Crochet is the perfect stitch for when you would like the ease and simplicity of the double crochet stitch, yet with a subtle twist.

The beauty of this stitch show through when you work it as a fabric as I have done below.  When worked row upon row, the alternative double crochet rows look like they are reflections of one another.

This stitch is also slightly thicker than a simple double crochet which means that your fabric will be more solid in nature.

the Alternative Double Crochet Stitch worked in green yarn

Materials:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Cotton Aran by Paintbox Yarns. It is an aran weight yarn. The hook shown here and in the video below is a wooden streamline hook by Furls Crochet. However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose.

The Alternative Double Crochet Stitch:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial.

To begin, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains.  For this stitch pattern you may use any multiple of stitches plus two for your foundation chain.

Row One:

Work one alternative double crochet into the fourth chain from your hook.

To work the alternative double crochet, yarn over and insert your hook into the stitch indicated. Yarn over and draw up a loop.  Yarn over and draw through one loop only.  Yarn over and draw through all three loops on your hook.

Work one alternative double crochet into the next stitch and into each stitch across.

Chain three (counts as a stitch) and turn.

Row Two:

Skip the first stitch (at the base of your chain three), work one alternative double crochet into the next stitch and in each stitch to the end.

Chain three (counts as a stitch) and turn.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern, simply repeat row two.  Fasten off and weave in your ends.

  1. Am I misreading these directions, or is this the same as the herringbone double crochet?
