A green and white crochet beanie featuring the Moroccan Tile Stitch

The Lexington Beanie is worked from the brim up.  I’ve worked an extra long brim that can be folded over to make it extra warm.  The brim is worked using slip stitches.  It’s my favourite way to work a brim as it has lots of stretch and, I find, keeps its shape and structure quite well.

The Moroccan Tile Stitch is an attractive stitch that is best shown off in multiple colours.  I have worked it in two colours here and I can’t wait to see how yours turns out!

Materials:

For the Lexington Beanie, I will be working with two colours of a worsted weight yarn.  In the photos and in the video tutorial I am using the Color Theory Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn.  It is super soft and 100% acrylic.

For this pattern you will also need a 4.5 mm crochet hook.  In the video tutorial below I will be using a Birchwood Hook by Rowan Yarns.

Pattern Notes:

  • Pattern is written in American English terms.
  • Brim of hat is worked in rows, body of hat is worked in rounds.
  • Ch 1 at beginning of round does not count as stitch.
  • Do not turn at the end of each round, unless stated otherwise.
  • Weave in ends as needed.
  • OPTIONAL: Brim of hat may be worked using either single crochet stitches or half double crochet stitches instead of the slip stitches.  You may also wish to shorten the foundation chain to make a brim that is not folded over (i.e. ch 13)
  • To change the size of your beanie, you will need a multiple of 3 stitches for the first round of the hat body.

Free Crochet Pattern:

Brim (Worked in rows):

With colour A, ch 26 (For brim that is folded over).

Row 1: Sl st in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.  Ch 1, turn.  (25 sl sts)

Row 2: Working in the blo, sl st in each st across.  Ch 1, turn.  (25 sl sts)

Continue to repeat row 2 until work from the beginning measures approximately 16-17 inches.

Do not fasten off, but fold brim of hat so that two shorter ends meet. Now working through both thicknesses, sl st across working through the blo on each side. Do not fasten off.  If working the long brim that you intend on folding, simply turn your work to work around the edge.  If you are working a short brim that you will not fold up to wear, turn work right side out (so that the right side is facing you).

Now working around the edge of the brim, continue working in rounds as follows:
