Get ready to learn five new crochet market bag crochet patterns in five weeks!

Over the last few years I have been hosting the Marvellous Market Bag crochet Along here on Rich Textures Crochet usually during the month of May.  This crochet along is always so much fun, it’s a great way to use up cotton yarn scarps and learn new stitches.  Over the summer I realized that I had several other market bag designs sitting on my shelf and I thought, “Why wait?” So now I am excited to bring you five NEW market bag designs, just in time for the holiday season!

The Marvellous Market Bag Crochet Along Fall 2022

You may wish to make these bags for yourself, or you may choose to make them for family and friends, they are so much fun! And as we are all becoming more and more environmentally aware, I thought these bags might also make great gift bags as you prepare for holiday shopping and gifting

How it works:

Beginning November 2nd, 2022 I will release one new crochet market bag pattern each week for five weeks.

The schedule will be as follows:

  • Wednesday, November 2nd: Lavender Market Bag
  • Wednesday, November 9th: Rosemary Market Bag
  • Wednesday, November 16th: Uptown Market Bag
  • Wednesday, November 23rd: Downtown Market Bag
  • Wednesday, November 30th: Jasmine Market Bag

The pattern will be posted FOR FREE in written form here on my blog. A full video tutorial will also be posted here and to my YouTube channel.  As well each week, for those who wish I will make a PDF available that can be purchased from my Etsy and Ravelry Shops.  All of the patterns will be free here on my blog and YouTube Channel and will forever remain free here even after the crochet along has ended.

The Patterns:

Each crochet market bag features a similar construction and is worked as one piece from the bottom and into the continuous handles. Unlike in other years where you’ve needed to mark the placement of the handles before working them, this year you will not! They range in difficulty from easy to intermediate.

Do not be afraid to try the more challenging designs, as you will have a video tutorial and a community to help you along the way!

Each bag is worked from the bottom up and I have worked them using one to two different colours, however you may use as many or as few as you would like.  Once again, if you have some cotton scraps lying around, this is a great way to use them up!

The Materials:

To work the market bags you will need a 5 mm (H/8) crochet hook. I will be using a Birch Wood Crochet Hook by Rowan Yarns.  These hooks have a metal tip with a beautiful, smooth wooden handle.

Each of the crochet market bags is worked in a 100% worsted weight cotton yarn. I will be using the Pima Cotton by Lion Brand (Lion Brand® Pima Cotton Yarn; 186 yds/170m; 3.5 oz/100g; 100% cotton; medium/worsted weight). However you can use a worsted weight cotton of your choice. Another option would be the Bernat Handicrafter Cotton by Yarnspirations.

My colours and approximate yardage for each bag is as follows:

  • Week One: You will need approximately 372 yards in total. I will be using 2 different colours of the Pima Cotton: Approximately 1 ball of Vintage, 1 ball of Rose Taupe.
  • Week Two: You will need approximately 372 yards in total. I will be using 2 different colours of the Pima Cotton: Approximately 2 ball Vintage, 1 ball Dragonfly.
  • Week Three: You will need approximately 500 yards in total. I will be using 2 different colours of the Pima Cotton: Approximately 2 balls of Vintage, 1 ball of Blueprint
  • Week Four: You will need approximately 372 yards in total. I will be using 2 different colours of the Pima Cotton: Approximately 1 ball of Pewter, 1 ball of Mademoiselle.
  • Week Five:You will need approximately 500 yards in total. I will be using 2 different colours of the Pima Cotton: Approximately 2 ball of Pewter, 1 ball of Mademoiselle.

Along with your yarn and hook you will also need a pair of scissors and a yarn needle for finishing off.
