A few weeks ago I introduced you to the extended single crochet stitch, today we will learn how to crochet the Extended Half Double Crochet Stitch.
The group of extended basic crochet stitches are great stitches for when you wish to add some height to a project. They are easy to work and when added to a crochet pattern give the design more drape and a little more interest than a basic stitch.
To “extend” the stitch simply means to draw up a loop through one loop on your hook before proceeding to complete the stitch. Sometimes I like to use them if I am working a pattern where the stitch is worked around a post or in a front or back loop of a stitch two or more rows below.
The Materials:
For this tutorial today, I will be using a small amount of Heatherly by KnitPicks and WeCrochet in a single colour. You are also able to work this stitch in a single colour or more. The Heatherly yarn is a medium/worsted weight yarn that is a wool blend. Along with my worsted weight yarn, I will also be working with a 5 mm (H/8) crochet hook.

Extended Half Double Crochet Stitch Pattern:
Stitches and Abbreviations:
Ch – Chain
ExHdc – Extended Half Double Crochet (Yarn over, insert your hook into the indicated st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through one lp on your hook, yo and draw through three loops on your hook. ExtendedHalf Double Crochet Stitch made.)
Lp – Loop
Rpt – Repeat
Sc – Single Crochet
Sk – Skip
Sl st – Slip stitch
Sp – Space
Yo – Yarn over
Pattern Notes:
This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial and it may be worked in one colour or many. I will be working this pattern in a single colour.
This pattern is written in American crochet terms.
The turning ch does not count as a stitch.
To begin, make a slip knot and make a foundation chain. For this stitch pattern, you may use any number of stitches for your foundation chain and then add 2 for your turning chain.
For example, ch 30.
Row One:
ExHdc (See “Stitches and Abbreviations” above) in the 3rd ch from your hook, ExHdc in each st across. Ch 2 (does not count as a st), turn.
Row Two:
ExHdc in the 1st st, st and in each st across. Ch 2, turn.
And that’s it!
For the rest of the pattern, simply repeat row two. Fasten off, weave in your ends.
