Coral Reef Blanket Crochet Pattern

Grab your super bulky weight yarn and whip up this easy, plush and cozy Coral Reef Blanket crochet pattern!

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a crochet blanket pattern. Not too long ago Yarnspirations released their Bernat Blanket colour of the year and I felt inspired! Unfortunately this colour way does not stick around for long, however, the good news is that this blanket can be made using any super bulky weight yarn.

Our crochet blanket pattern today is going to be worked all as one piece. Once the edging is worked, the pattern is a simple one-row repeat that you will be able to work while streaming a favourite program or enjoying the latest podcast or audiobook.

Because the blanket is worked in a super bulky weight yarn, it is going to work up fairly quickly! I managed to crochet mine within a few days of steady crochet time.

Being worked in a super bulky weight yarn also means that it will be super cozy, and have some weight to it.

After I finished my blanket, it quickly became my children’s favourite to curl up under while playing on their tablet.

What materials do you need to make this crochet blanket?

I mentioned above that for the Coral Reef Blanket crochet pattern I used the Bernat Blanket yarn by Yarnspirations. This yarn is a 100% Polyester yarn that is very soft and plush. Although the particular colour way that I used is no longer available, you may use any super bulky weight Blanket yarn. It comes in a wide array of colours! I used about 2000 yards to complete my blanket.

Along with the yarn you will also need an 8 mm (size L) crochet hook.

Coral Reef Blanket Crochet Pattern:

Skill Level: Easy
Gauge:  9 stitches x 5 rows of fpdc/bpdc = 4 inches
Finished Size: 45 x 50 inches excluding fringe
Yarn:  Bernat Blanket by Yarnspirations(100% Polyester; 35.3 oz/1000g; 733 yds/670 m; Super Bulky (6) Weight; You will need 2 balls.
Hook: Size L (8 mm) hook. 
Notions: Yarn Needle.

Stitches and Abbreviations:

Bpdc – Back Post Double Crochet
Ch – Chain
Dc – Double Crochet
Fpdc – Front Post Double Crochet
Hdc – Half Double Crochet
Lp – Loop
Rpt – Repeat
Sc – Single Crochet
Sk – Skip
Sl St – Slip Stitch
Yo – Yarn Over

Pattern Notes:

• Pattern is written in American English terms.
• Pattern is worked in rows.
• Ch 1 at beginning of row does not count as stitch.
• Ch 3 at the beginning of row counts as a double crochet stitch.
• Weave in ends as needed.
• To change the size of your blanket you will need a multiple of 3 + 2 stitches for your foundation chain.

Free Crochet Pattern:

Ch 101

Row 1: Dc in the 4th ch from your hook (ch-3 at the start counts as a dc st) and in each st across. Ch 1, turn.  (99 sts)

Rows 2-4: Hdc in the 1st st, *fpdc in the 1st st, bpdc in the next st; Rpt from * across until 1 st remains, hdc in the final st.  Ch 1, turn.  At the end of row 4 only, ch 2, turn.

Rows 5 – 67 (Or until the blanket reaches the desired size): 2 dc in the 1st st, sk the next 2 sts, *[sc, 2 dc] in the next st, sk the next 2 chs; Rpt from * across to the final ch-2 sp (or st), sc in the final ch-2 sp (or st). Ch 2, turn.  At the end of row 67 only, ch 3 turn.

Row 68: Dc in the next st and in each st across.  Ch 1, turn.

Rows 69-71: Hdc in the 1st st, *fpdc in the 1st st, bpdc in the next st; Rpt from * across until 1 st remains, hdc in the final st.  Ch 1, turn. 

Fasten off, and weave in ends.
