The Larksfoot is a popular crochet stitch.  It is easy to work and can be worked in multiple colours or only one!

As with the other stitch patterns on my blog that include spike stitches, such as the Rake Stitch and the Crow’s Foot Stitch, when working your spike stitches, you will want to pay close attention to your tension.

When working the spike stitch be sure to draw the loop up to the height of the stitch in the row you are working in order to ensure that your work does not bunch.  You also do not want it to be too loose to the stitches will not lie flat.

That being said, once you get the hang of it, it is easy and you will love the variety that the stitches provides.

Larksfoot crochet stitch in purple green and blue

Materials:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Cotton Aran by Paintbox Yarns. It is an aran weight yarn. The hook shown here and in the video below is a wooden streamline hook by Furls Crochet. However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose.

Don’t forget to check out the video tutorial below!

Larksfoot Crochet Stitch:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial.  At the end of each row you will need to chain three or chain four and turn your work. The chain three does count as a double crochet stitch.

For this tutorial today I will work this stitch in three colours.  Colour A will be blue, colour B will be green, colour C will be purple.

To begin, with your colour A, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains.  For this stitch pattern you will need a multiple of four plus one for your foundation chain.

Today I will chain a total of 21 chain stitches.

Row One:

With colour A, double crochet in the fourth chain from your hook and in the next stitch, * chain one, skip the next stitch, double crochet in each of the next three stitches.

Repeat from * across.  Chain three and turn your work.

Row Two:

Skip the first stitch and double crochet in each of the next two stitches, * chain one, skip the next chain one space, double crochet in each of the next three stitches.

Repeat from * across switching to colour B in the final stitch.  Chain four (counts as a double crochet and chain one) and turn your work.

Row Three:

With Colour B,  skip the first two stitches, * double crochet in the next stitch. Work a long double crochet stitches in the chain space two rows below.

To work your long double crochet stitch, yarn over and insert your hook in the chain space two rows below.  Yarn over and draw up a loop, drawing it up to the height of a double crochet stitch.  Yarn over and draw through two loops on your hook twice.

Double crochet in the next stitch, chain one, skip the next stitch.

Repeat from * across ending with a double crochet in the final stitch.

Chain four and turn your work.

Row Four:

Skip the first stitch and chain one space, * double crochet in each of the next three stitches, chain one, skip the next chain one space.

Repeat from * across ending with a double crochet in the final stitch and switch to colour C.

Chain three and turn your work.

Row Five:

With Colour C, skip the first stitch, * long double crochet in the next chain one space two rows below, double crochet in the next stitch, chain one, skip the next stitch, double crochet in the next stitch.

Repeat from * across.  Chain three and turn your work.

Row Six:

Skip the first stitch and double crochet in each of the next two stitches, * chain one, skip the next chain one space, double crochet in each of the next three stitches.

Repeat from * across switching to colour A in the final stitch.  Chain four and turn your work.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern, repeat rows three to six for as long as desired and alternating colours as needed.  Fasten off and weave in your ends.
