The Crochet Box Stitch is a beautiful crochet stitch with a wonderful texture.  The stitch is worked in rows and can be worked in one colour or many.

The crochet box stitch creates a robust near solid fabric.  It is worked using double crochet stitches and front post single crochet stitches.  It is worked in rows and grows fairly quickly.  I could see this stitch being used in a variety of projects such as blankets and shawls, and in a variety of yarn weights.

Materials for this Tutorial:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Pima Cotton Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn in two different colours. It is a worsted weight yarn. The hook shown in the video below is a 5 mm birchwood crochet hook by Rowan Yarns.  However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose, even experiment with colour!

  • Pattern is written in American English terms
  • Weave in ends as needed
  • This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial. You may work the stitch in one colour or many.  I will be working the design in two different colours.

To begin you will make a foundation chain.  For this pattern you will need a foundation chain of ten plus two stitches (10 + 2) for your foundation chain.

For example, with colour A, chain 32.

Row 1:

With colour A, sc in the 2nd ch from your hook, *sk the next 4 chs, [5 dc, ch 1, 5 dc] in the next ch, sk the next 4 chs, sc in the next st; Rpt from * across.  Ch 1, turn.

Row 2:

Sc in the 1st st, *fpsc in each of the next 5 dc, ch 1, fpsc in each of the next 5 dc, fpsc in the next sc; Rpt from * across to the final sc, sc in the final sc, switch to colour B in the final st.  Ch 4 (counts as a dc, ch 1), turn.

Row 3:

With colour B, dc in the 1st st, *ch 3, sk the next 5 sts, sc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 3, sk the next 5 sts, [dc, ch 2, dc] in the next st; Rpt from * across to the final sc, [dc, ch-1, dc] in the final sc.  Ch 1, turn.

Row 4:

Sc in the 1st st, ch 1, sk the next ch-1 sp, sc in the next sc, *ch 3, sk the next ch-3 sp, sc in the next sc, ch 3, sk the next ch-3 sp, sc in the next dc, ch 2, sk the next ch-2 sp, sc in the next dc; Rpt from * across to the final 3 sts, sc in the next dc, ch 1, sk the next ch st, sc in the 3rd ch of the starting ch-4.  Ch 4 (counts as a dc, ch 1), turn.

Row 5:

5 dc in the 1st st, sk the ch-3 sp, *sc in the next ch-1 sp 4 rows below, sk the next ch-3, [5 dc, ch 1, 5 dc] in the next ch-2 sp 2 rows below; Rpt from * across to the final ch-1 sp, 5 dc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1, dc in the final sc.  Ch 1, turn.

Row 6:

Sc in the 1st st, ch 1, *fpsc in each of the next 11 sts, ch 1; Rpt from * across to the starting ch-4, ch 1, sc in the 3rd ch of the starting ch-4, switch to colour A in the final st, ch 1, turn.

Row 7:

With colour A, sc in the 1st st, *ch 3, sk the next ch-1 sp and 5 sts, [dc, ch 2, dc] in the next st, ch 3, sk the next 5 sts, sc in the next ch-1 sp; Rpt from * across ending with the final sc in the top of the sc st.  Ch 1, turn.

Row 8:

Sc in the 1st st, *ch 3, sk the next ch-3 sp, sc in the next dc, ch 2, sk the next ch-2 sp, sc in the next dc, ch 3, sk the next ch-3 sp, sc in the next st; Rpt from * across to the final 3 sts, sc in the next st, ch 1, sk the next ch-1 sp, sc in the final st.  Ch 1, turn.

Row 9:

Sc in the 1st st, *sk the next ch-3 sp, [5 dc, ch 1, 5 dc] in the next ch-2 sp 2 rows below, sk the next ch-3 sp, sc in the next ch-1 sp 4 rows below; Rpt from * across, sc in the final st.  Ch 1, turn.

Row 10:

Sc in the 1st st, *fpsc in each of the next 5 dc, ch 1, fpsc in each of the next 5 dc, fpsc in the next sc; Rpt from * across to the final sc, sc in the final sc, switch to colour B in the final st.  Ch 4 (counts as a dc, ch 1), turn.
