The Closed Shell crochet stitch pattern has a beautiful reversible texture that would make a gorgeous shawl or blanket!
If you’re looking for a beautiful crochet stitch pattern for your next project whether it be a baby blanket, afghan or shawl, this Closed Shell stitch is perfect!
It is worked using basic crochet stitches including double and single crochet. It is a one row repeat making it a great choice for beginners. I have worked it using a solid colour yarn, but of course you can mix it up! You may also wish to experiment with this stitch pattern in different yarn weights.
The Materials:
For this tutorial today, I will be using a small amount of Heatherly by KnitPicks and WeCrochet in a single colour. You are also able to work this stitch in a single colour or more. The Heatherly yarn is a medium/worsted weight yarn that is a wool blend. Along with my worsted weight yarn, I will also be working with a 5 mm (H/8) crochet hook.

Ch – Chain
Dc – Double Crochet
Lp – Loop
Rpt – Repeat
Sc – Single Crochet
Sk – Skip
Sl st – Slip stitch
Sp – Space
Yo – Yarn over
Pattern Notes:
This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial and it may be worked in one colour or many. I will be working this pattern in a single colour.
This pattern is written in American crochet terms.
To begin, make a slip knot and make a foundation chain. For this stitch pattern, you will need a multiple of six chains, plus one (6+1) for your turning chain.
For example, ch 25.
Row One:
Work 2 dc in the 4th ch from your hook, *sk the next 2 sts, sc in the next st, sk the next 2 sts, 4 dc in the next st; Rpt from * across ending with a sc in the final st. Ch 3, turn.
Row Two:
Work 2 dc in the 1st st, *sk the next 2 sts, sc in the next sp (this will fall between the 2nd and 3rd dc of the set of 4 dc below), sk the next 2 sts, 4 dc in the next sc; Rpt from * across ending with a sc in the final ch-3 sp. Ch 3, turn.
And that’s it!
Repeat row 2 for the pattern, then fasten off and weave in your ends.
