The Children’s Classic Knit Look Beanie Crochet Pattern has been one of my most requested crochet patterns this past year!
And I am happy to say that it is finally here!
Shortly after releasing the crochet pattern for the Adult Classic Knit Look Beanie, I began receiving questions about how one might adjust the pattern for babies and children. Unlike some of my other crochet hat patterns, simply knowing a stitch multiple wasn’t going to work and a more detailed crochet pattern for a children’s hat was needed.

How to Crochet an easy children’s hat?
The Children’s Classic Knit Look Beanie crochet pattern is constructed in the same easy was as the adult version – in rows, side to side, and exclusively in slip stitches. These slip stitches are what create this favourite knit look.
Slip stitches can be a little daunting to work. But with a little patience, and by keeping your stitches extra loose, your work will be well worth it! They create a snug fitting crochet beanie that keeps its shape after multiple washes and lots of wear!
What kind of hook and yarn should I use to crochet a children’s hat?
There are many different kinds of yarn that one can use to crochet a hat for babies and children. For my sample pieces which you will see in the photos and video tutorial below I used a super soft 100% acrylic yarn called Heartland by Lion Brand. It is a worsted/Medium weight yarn.
For a crochet hook, to work this crochet pattern you will need a 5 mm (H/8). In the video tutorial below you will see me using a blush metal streamline crochet hook by Furls Crochet.

What size should I make a children’s crochet hat?
This crochet pattern includes six children’s sizes including from premie up to a child about ten years of age. It is a unisex design that it quite versatile! The suggested circumference in each size as outlined below is quite flexible as the slip stitches have quite a bit of stretch to them.
There is also a lot of flexibility in the length as the hat can be worn with the brim folded up or not.
You may also choose to add a pompom or leave it off – both options work with the Children’s Classic Knit Look Beanie!
