Welcome to New Stitch Sunday on Rich Textures Crochet! Today we will learn the Checked Boxes crochet stitch pattern.
This fun crochet stitch pattern is one that would be great for blankets and shawls. The stitch design is easy to work and features rows of crossed double crochet stitches and double crochet “boxes.” You will find that the pattern works up in no time and is an easy repeat to remember.
Materials for this Tutorial:
For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of the Basic Stitch Anti Pilling yarn by Lion Brand. It is a soft worsted weight 100% acrylic yarn. The hook shown in the video below is a 5 mm (H/8) hand carved and hand painted hook by Hand Carved Hooks and Roux Studio. Another favourite is a 5 mm Birchwood Crochet Hook by Rowan Yarn – one of my favourites! However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose.
Thank you so much for stopping by! If you enjoy the tutorial below, be sure to also check out some of the many other crochet stitch tutorials on my site and pin this for later! You may wish to start with the Shelled Cluster Stitch | How to Crochet.

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial and it may be worked in one colour or many. I will be working this pattern in a solid colour.
This pattern is written using American crochet terms.
To begin make a slip knot and make a foundation chain. For this stitch you will need a multiple of 8 + 5 stitches for your foundation chain.
For example, ch 29.
Row One:
Dc in the 4th ch from your hook, dc in the next st, *ch 1, sk the next 3 sts, dc in the next st, ch 1, dc in the previous 2nd sk st, ch 1, sk the next st, dc in each of the next 3 sts; Rpt from * across ending with a dc in each of the final 3 sts. Ch 3, turn.
Row Two:
Sk the 1st 2 sts, *dc in the next st, ch 1, dc in the 1st st of the previous sk sts, ch 1, sk the next ch-1 sp, dc in the next dc, dc in the next ch-1 sp, dc in the next dc, ch 1, sk the next ch-1 sp, sk the next 2 sts; Rpt from * across, ending with a dc in the top of the turning ch (the same st as your last crossed dc), Ch 3, turn.
Row Three:
Dc in the next ch-1 sp, dc in the next st, * Ch 1, sk the next ch-1 sp, sk the next 2 sts, dc in the next st, ch 1, dc in the 1st st of the previous sk sts, ch 1, sk the next ch-1 sp, dc in the next dc, dc in the next ch-1 sp, dc in the next dc; Rpt from * across, ending with a dc in the next st, dc in the next ch-1 sp, dc in the top of the turning ch. Ch 3, turn.
And that’s it!
For the rest of the pattern simply repeat rows two and three. Fasten off, weave in your ends.
