The Marching Ants Stitch is a lacy stitch with chains and clusters that remind me of marching ants!

The lacy cluster and chain stitches are set up in a grid like appearance.  While the pattern has several rows when it comes to the repeat, it is easy to work and has an interesting design.  It would look wonderful in a crochet shawl!

A lacy crochet stitch pattern featuring chains and cluster stitches that resembles marching ants

Materials for this Tutorial:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Pima Cotton Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn in a single colour. It is a worsted weight yarn. The hook shown in the video below is a 5 mm birchwood crochet hook by Rowan Yarns.  However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose, even experiment with colour!

Thank you so much for stopping by! If you enjoy the tutorial below, be sure to also check out some of the many other crochet stitch tutorials on my site and pin this for later! You may wish to start with the Suzette Stitch | How to Crochet.

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial.  You may work the stitch in one colour or many.  I will be working the design in a solid colour.

To begin, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains.  For this stitch pattern you will need a multiple of 16 stitches plus eight stitches for your foundation chain (multiples of 16+8).

For example, ch 40.

Row One:

Dc in 6th ch from your hook, *ch 1, sk the next ch, dc in the next st; rpt from * across, ch 4 and turn.

Row Two:

Sk the 1st ch-1 sp, dc in the next dc, ch 1, sk the ch-1 sp, dc in the next dc, *ch 5, sk the next 2 dc, cluster in the next dc, ch 5, sk the next 2 dc sts, dc in the next dc, [ch 1, sk the next ch-1 sp, dc in the next dc] twice ; rpt from * across, ch 1, sk the ch-1 sp, dc in the next dc, ch 1, sk the ch st, dc in the next ch, ch 3 (Counts as a dc), turn.

Row Four:

Dc in each of the next 4 sts, *ch 4, sk the next 3 chs, sc in the next ch, sc in the sp between the next 2 sc, sc in the next ch, sk the next 3 chs, dc in each of the next 5 dc; rpt from * across, ch 4, turn.

Row Five:

Sk the next st, dc in the next dc, ch 1, sk the next st, dc in the next dc, *ch 5, sk the next ch-4 and sc, cluster in the next sc, ch 5, sk the next sc and ch-4, dc in the next dc, [ch 1, sk the next st, dc in the next dc] twice ; rpt from * across, ch 1, sk the next st, dc in the next dc, ch 1, sk the next dc, dc in the next st, ch 4, turn.

Row Six:

[Sk the next ch-1 sp, dc in the next st] twice, *[ch 1, sk the next ch, dc in the next ch] twice, ch 1, sk the next ch, dc in the top of the cluster st, [ch 1, sk the next ch, dc in the next ch] twice, [ch 1, sk the next ch-1 sp, dc in the next st] three times; rpt from * across, ch 4 and turn.
