A Copper and off white stripped crochet beanie

The Crochet Beanie today (and the scarf that will follow on Friday) is made using basic crochet stitches including single crochet and double crochet.  If this is your first time participating in a crochet along and/or you are new to crocheting, this is a good crochet hat to get your feet wet with!

The Arden Beanie (and all of the beanies in the crochet along) is worked from the brim up.  I have worked the brim extra long so that I may fold it up.  You may however choose to work it half the length to have a shorter brim.  The other variation you may choose fro the brim is in the stitches.

When working my crochet hats I love to use a slip stitch brim – that is a brim that is worked entirely of slip stitches worked in the back loop only.  Slip Stitches, I realize, are not everyone’s favourite! So for the brim, if your are not partial to slip stitches, you may wish to swap them out for single crochet or half double crochet stitches.  I can’t wait to see what you choose!

Materials:

For the Arden Beanie, I will be working with two different colours of a worsted weight yarn.  In the photos and in the video tutorial I am using the Color Theory Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn.  It is super soft and 100% acrylic.  You will need a full ball for your colour A and only a partial for your colour B.

For this pattern you will also need a 4.5 mm crochet hook.  In the video tutorial below I will be using a Birchwood Hook by Rowan Yarns.

  • Brim of hat is worked in rows, body of hat is worked in rounds.
  • Ch 1 at beginning of round does not count as stitch.
  • Do not turn at the end of each round, unless stated otherwise.
  • Weave in ends as needed.
  • OPTIONAL: Brim of hat may be worked using either single crochet stitches or half double crochet stitches instead of the slip stitches.  You may also wish to shorten the foundation chain to make a brim that is not folded over (i.e. ch 13)
  • To change the size of your beanie, you may use any multiple of stitches
