Welcome to the annual Wonderful Hats Crochet Along where we will learn to make five crochet hat patterns and five crochet scarf patterns together!
It’s a wonderful time of the year to crochet hats and winter accessories. And I know that many of you would probably say that everyday is a good day to crochet hats.
This time of year is especially good as it is time for the annual hat and scarf crochet along here on Rich Textures Crochet! It is a little later this year and I can’t believe how fast the summer flew. But, don’t worry, we can still get our hats and scarves done by the Christmas holidays!
This is the seventh year for the Wonderful Hats Crochet along and it is always a wonderful event. If you would like to check out a couple of the past events, you can! All of the patterns remain available here on Rich Textures Crochet and on my YouTube channel (under the Wonderful Hats Crochet Along Playlist). The 2026 Event:
This year the crochet along will run for four weeks during the month of October. During this time, one hat pattern AND one coordinating accessory pattern will be published here on Rich Textures Crochet and on YouTube each week. All of the crochet patterns will be free to follow here with an option for a paid PDF through my Etsy and Ravelry shops.
If you wish, as you work, you may share your progress on social media (IG, Threads, BlueSky, TikTok, etc.) and in the Rich Textures Crochet Community on Facebook. Be sure to use the hashtag #WonderfulHatsCAL to help make them easier to find!
How the Crochet Along Works:
Beginning October 7th, I will release one new crochet hat pattern each week on Wednesday for four weeks. On Fridays I will release a matching scarf or neck warmer pattern! All you have to do is keep checking back here on richtexturescrochet.com for the new pattern, make the pattern, and then share your accomplishment with others!

The Patterns:
The eight crochet patterns will be released one a week here on my website for free. And THEY WILL ALWAYS BE FREE here, even after the crochet along has ended. So if you are unable to complete one of the hats or scarves during the month, no worries! Everyone can work at the own pace and share later. I’m still enjoying seeing your hats and scarves from previous years in the Rich Textures Crochet Community!
Each hat pattern can be worked using a worsted/medium weight yarn. In the tutorials I will be using the Swish Yarn by Knit Picks. It is a 100% Fine Superwash Merino wool yarn that is soft and wonderful for working winter accessories. If you would like to substitute this yarn for another you may do so! If you are looking for a 100% acrylic option, I recommend the Lion Brand Heartland yarn. It is sold and comes in a variety of earth and jewel tones. I will post the exact yarn and colour that I’ve used for each hat and scarf below.
With the yarn, I am working with a 5 mm crochet hook.
The crochet patterns for the hats and scarves all fall into the category of intermediate. But if you are newer to crochet or find yourself to be more comfortable on the easy side of crochet, don’t let that deter you from giving them a try! There will be lots of support along the way in the community group and through the free video tutorial.
Materials for each Hat and Scarf/Cowl:
For each pattern I will be using the Swish Yarn by KnitPicks. Fiber Content: 100% Fine Superwash Merino Wool, Weight: Worsted, Yards: 110, Grams: 50. All of the hats will require 2-3 balls of yarn if using the same. Check out the exact details below:
Wednesday, October 7th: The Jordan Beanie: You will need approximately 280 yards. Colours Shown: Colour A: Marble Heather (1.5 balls) and Colour B: Estuary Heather (1 ball)
Friday, October 9th: The Jordan Scarf: You will need approximately 440 yards (4 balls) divided between 2 colours. Depending on the length of your optional fringe, you may need one extra ball in each colour. Colours Shown: Colour A: Marble Heather and Colour B: Estuary Heather
Wednesday, October 14th: The Robin Beanie: You will need approximately 220 yards (2 balls) divided between 2 colours. Colours Shown: Colour A: Marine Heather, Colour B: Stonewash
Friday, October 16th: The Robin Scarf: You will need approximately 440 yards (4 balls). Colour Shown: Stonewash
Wednesday, October 21st: The Blake Beanie: You will need approximately 220 yards (2 balls) divided with colour A at 110 yards and colour B at 110 yards. Colours Shown: Colour A: Squirrel Heather and Colour B: Wonderland Heather.
Friday, October 23rd: The Blake Scarf: You will need approximately 440 yards (4 balls) divided with colour A at 330 yards and colour B at 110 yards. Colours Shown: Colour A: Squirrel Heather and Colour B: Wonderland Heather
Wednesday, October 28th: The Emery Beanie: You will need approximately 1.5 balls in colour A and 1 ball in colour B. Colours Shown: Colour A: Dove Heather and Colour B: Hazed Heather
Friday, October 30th: The Emery Cowl: You will need approximately 2 balls in colour A and 1 ball in colour B. Colours Shown: Colour A: Dove Heather and Colour B: Hazed Heather
Pro Tips!
A couple things to be aware of with these hats:
- All the hats are all worked from the bottom up! This is my favourite way to work a hat as it creates a nice shape that holds well.
- All of the hat brims are worked the same way using slip stitches! If you are someone who likes to work ahead, once you are finished the first hat you can work your brims for the next four!
- Each Hat looks great with a pompom or without! Customize it to give a unique, personalized look!
- I love to use slip stitches when working my brims. You may wish to change the slip stitches to single crochet or half double crochet – This will be explained again when the patterns are revealed!
Hat Sizing!
Each of the hats are sized to fit an adult with a 20-22 inch circumference. For each pattern I will include the multiples of the first round so that you may adjust the size of your beanie (I will also provide the multiples for the scarves and cowl).
Please note: Everyone crochets with a different tension and things like the yarn and even hook brand can affect the overall size of your beanie (even if you are using a #4 medium worsted weight yarn and 5mm hook). For this reason, I will also include in the pattern the gauge. The gauge will tell you how many stitches and rows of those stitches I get when I work the pattern. If you do not get the same number of stitches, your hat may be larger or smaller. Sometimes it is only a quick fix! If you are getting fewer stitches in a 4 inch square than I am, all you may need to do is grab a smaller hook. And vice versa. If this is still not working, you may use the stitch multiples in each pattern to adjust.
