Have you ever looked at an item that was not yarn and thought to yourself, “I could crochet with that?” That is exactly what happened to me not to long ago in the hardware store!

My husband and I took a trip to the hardware store not too long ago.  And as we were browsing the aisles we came across the one dedicated to various ropes and twine.  What first caught my attention was the colour – I didn’t know that twine came in so many! And as I looked over them, the thought suddenly struck me, “I could crochet with that!”

Twine is relatively in expensive, it’s durable, and, as I most recently found out, comes in a variety of colours a weights.

My mind started racing, and I grew excited about the rustic possibilities for outdoor crochet items (this mat will not be the only crochet pattern you’ll find on this blog made out of twine – more are coming soon!).

The first project I wanted to start was a new doormat.

I have been wanting to spruce up our front entryway for a little while now – trade out the old ragged door mat for something fresh with a pop of colour.  I also have dreams of repainting the door and trim, but that’s another story!

I thought the twine would hold up perfectly!

This is an easy mat with a bit of colour work.  It did take a little bit of time getting used to working with the twine.  But once I found the right hook size and got used to the tension (or lack there of when it comes to twine – it will work up how it works up), it became more and more easy to work with.

When working with twine I do recommend a good solid crochet hook.  I would go for a solid strong plastic (as I used) or solid metal.  This will minimize the potential for breaking your hook.  I also found that wooden hooks seemed to “stick” to the twine, making it harder to glide through the stitches.

I love the finished natural and rustic look of the twine, and it was definitely fun working with the new textures!

This crochet pattern will be written out in full, but if you would like to purchase a pdf or save it to your library, you may do so from either my Etsy or Ravelry Shop:

– Pattern is written in American English terms.

– I recommend using a solid metal or strong plastic hook for this project. The twine can
be very stiff to work with and this would reduce the risk of breaking your hook! I also
found that the wooden crochet hooks did not glide as easily through the twine.
