Hello and welcome to Learn to Crochet with RTC! Today we will learn how to make a single crochet stitch.
Now that you have learned how to make a slip knot and a foundation chain, the next stitch that you need to learn is the single crochet stitch.
The single crochet stitch is found in most crochet patterns. In a written crochet pattern you will find it abbreviated as “sc.”
For example, in a written crochet pattern you may see something like “sc in each of the next 5 sts.” This means that you will make one single crochet stitch in each of the next five stitches.
Let’s take a closer look at how the single crochet stitch is made. Following this photo tutorial, you will also a free video tutorial.
In order to make a single crochet, you will need to have a foundation chain or stitch below to work in. Check out this tutorial on how to make a foundation chain: Learn to Crochet: How to Make a Chain Stitch
In this tutorial, I will start by making a foundation chain.
Step One: Make a slip knot
Step Two: Make a Foundation Chain:
Step Three: Insert your hook in the second chain from your hook (I like to work in the back bumps of the chain. You will insert your hook from the front to the back)
Step Four: Place your yarn over your hook, pull the yarn through the chain stitch pulling up another loop on your hook. You will now have two loops on your hook.
Step Five: Place your yarn over your hook once more, pull the yarn through both of the loops on your hook. You will be left with one loop on your hook.
Continue repeating steps three to five in each of the chain stitches until you reach the end.
Next you will need to turn your work so that you can make another row of single crochet stitches on top of the ones just made.
So next, make a chain stitch and turn your work so that your are working back across.
To make a single crochet in the first stitch you will insert your hook from the front to the back and under the top horizontal loops. Looking at it from the top, your will insert your hook under the “V.”
Then you will place your yarn over your hook, pull up a loop and complete the stitch as before. Repeat again across to the last stitch.

Interesting that you like to work in the back bumps! I often go the easy route of just doing the back loop of the chain, but only recently started learning about using the back bumps!
There are so many different ways! I used to work under the “v” of the starting chain until I came across a pattern that required the back bumps. I guess I never went back LOL
