Hello and welcome to Rich Textures Crochet! Today we will learn how to crochet the Rip Tides Square, one of 12 squares featured in the Patchwork Mystery Crochet Along.
If you have been plugging along on the Patchwork Mystery CAL, welcome to week 10! If you have not heard of the patchwork mystery CAL, it is a crochet along that began back in April (2019) and is a collaboration of twelve crochet designers, and I am so excited to be a part of it.
The results of this crochet along have been beautiful! The fun thing about it is that over the course of 12 weeks you will have been introduced to 10-12 different crochet designers and hopefully learned some new stitches and techniques along the way.
How to Join the CAL:
There are a couple of ways you can join, by either joining the Facebook Group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/PatchworkMysteryCAL/) or by joining the Ravelry Group (https://www.ravelry.com/groups/patchwork-mysterday-cal). These groups were created specifically for this crochet along and there you can post photos, get the other links to participating designer posts and see the beautiful work that so many others have done.

As mentioned, this is week 10 of that crochet along and this week I have the pleasure of bringing you the Rip Tides Square.
About Me:
If you are new to RTC (Rich Textures Crochet), welcome! To share a bit about myself, my name is Sarah and I live in Ontario, Canada although I grew up on the East Coast in Nova Scotia.
I am a wife, mother to four children and a boarder collie, and a librarian! We are a very busy household and when I am not crocheting you will find me hanging with my family, reading, gardening, or exploring the forests and beaches around my home.

This is why I chose to call my square the Rip Tides Square.
The Rip Tides Afghan Square:
This square is worked using a combination of double crochet, single crochet and front post triple crochet stitches. It features some great texture (also my favourite!) and colour work.

Rip Tides Square:
Skill Level: Easy
Gauge: 14 sts x 12 rows = 4 inches.
Finished Size: Approximately 12 x 12 inches.
Yarn: Vanna’s Choice® by Lion Brand® (%100 Acrylic; 3.5 oz/100 g; 170 yd/156 m). Approx. 35 yards colour A: Colonial Blue; Approx. 35 yards colour B: Sky Blue; Approx. 35 yards colour C: Silver Heather; Approx. 35 yards colour D: Pale Grey. You will only need 50-75 yards per ball for one square.
Hook: Size J/10 (6.0 mm). Adjust hook size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.
Notions: Yarn Needle.
Stitches and Abbreviations:
Ch – Chain
Dc – Double Crochet
FpTr – Front post Triple Crochet (a triple crochet worked around the post of the double
crochet two rows below)
Lp – Loop
Lps – Loops
Rpt – Repeat
Sc – Single Crochet
Sk – Skip
Sl st – Slip stitch
Yo – Yarn over
Pattern Notes:
- Pattern is written in American English terms.
- Pattern is worked in rows.
- Ch 1 at the beginning of a row does not count as a stitch.
- Ch 3 at the beginning of a row counts as a dc.
- To work around the post of the double crochet, with your hook in front of your work, yarn over twice, insert your hook from right to left behind the post of the double crochet stitch indicated two rows below. Complete the stitch as you would for a triple crochet worked in the top of the stitch.
Free Crochet Pattern:
With Colour A, ch 39.
Row 1: Dc in the 4th chain from hook and each each ch st to the end. Turn. (37 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, Sc in the first st and in each across. Turn. Change to colour B. (37 sts)
Row 3: With Colour B, ch 3 (counts as dc), sk first sc, * sk next sc, but working around the post of the dc below fptr, dc in next sc; Rpt from * to end of row, dc in the final st. Turn. (37 sts)
Row 4: Ch 1, Sc in the first st and in each across. Turn. Change to colour C. (37 sts)
Row 5: With Colour C, ch 3, sk first sc, dc in next sc, * sk next sc, but working around the post of the dc below fptr, dc in next sc; Rpt from * to end of row, dc in the final st. Turn. (37 sts)
Row 6: Ch 1, Sc in the first st and in each across. Turn. Change to colour D. (37 sts)
Row 7: With Colour D, ch 3 (counts as dc), sk first sc, * sk next sc, but working around the post of the dc below fptr, dc in next sc; Rpt from * to end of row, dc in the final st. Turn. (37 sts)
Row 8: Ch 1, Sc in the first st and in each across. Turn. Change to colour C. (37 sts)

Rows 14-31: Rpt rows 2-13 once, then repeat rows 2-7 once.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Edging (Worked in rounds):
With Colour A and with the right side facing, join yarn with a sl st in the top right corner.
Rnd 1: Sc in the same st as joining and in each st across the next 35 sts, work 3 sts in the corner st. Working along the side of the square, evenly work 35 sc across, work 3 sc in the corner st, sc 35 across, 3 sc in the corner st, work 35 sc evenly across, work 2 sc in final corner. Join with a sl st in first sc.
Fasten off, weave in ends.
Rip Tides Video Tutorial:
Just curious in your instructions shouldn’t they read “around try below” After you start making your trebles then shouldn’t it be that your are work a front post around a treble and not a DC below. Or am I confused.
