I LOVE the extended moss stitch! This stitch has it all! It works up quickly and features some great texture!

The extended moss stitch is a variation of the better known and popular moss stitch.  The difference being that instead of being worked in a single crochet, the extended moss stitch is worked using a double crochet stitch.

The pattern requires a couple of extra rows at the start in order to get the pattern set up.  But once the pattern is set up it flows smoothly and is quite a bit of fun to work.

The uniqueness of the pattern is that the double crochet stitches are long or spike double crochet stitches which means they are worked into the row two rows below, instead of the one immediately below.

Check out the free video tutorial below to see what I mean!

Materials:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Cotton Aran by Paintbox Yarns. It is an aran weight yarn. The hook shown here and in the video below is a wooden streamline hook by Furls Crochet. However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose.

The Extended Moss Stitch:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial.  At the end of each row you will need to chain one and turn your work. The chain one does not count as a stitch.

To begin, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains.  For this stitch pattern you will need an even number of stitches for your foundation chain.

Today I will chain a total of 20 chain stitches.

Row One:

Single crochet in the second chain and in each chain all the way across.

Chain three (counts as a double crochet) and turn your work.

Row Two:

Double Crochet in the next stitch,* chain one, skip one and double crochet in the next stitch.

Repeat from * across working a double crochet in the final stitch.

Chain one and turn your work.

Row Three:

Half Double Crochet in each of the first two stitches, work one long double crochet over the next chain one space and into the next stitch two rows below.

*Chain one, skip the next stitch, long double crochet working over the next chain one space and into the next stitch two rows below.

Repeat from * across to the final two stitches, half double crochet in each of the final two stitches.

Chain one and turn your work.

Row Four:

Half double crochet in each of the first two stitches, *chain one, skip the next stitch, long double crochet working over the next chain one space and into the next stitch two rows below.

Repeat from * across to the final two stitches, work one half double crochet stitch in each of the final two stitches.

Chain one and turn your work.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern, repeat rows three and four for the remainder of the pattern.

To finish off on a solid row:

To finish your work you may wish to work one final row that fills in the spaces left in the previous row.

To do this in the final row, work one half double crochet in the top of each stitch and one long double crochet over each chain one space.

Fasten off and weave in your ends.
