Play with colour as you work this Crochet Flame stitch! You may work it in a simple colour or in multiple as I will demonstrate below.

Regardless of how many colours you use, this stitch is interesting to look at and fun to work.  the pattern is made by working rows of single crochet and rows of spike stitches.  The fabric is a solid piece that is similar on both the front and the back making it a great stitch for your reversible projects.  It would create a trendy baby blanket or modern throw for your home!

The Crochet Flame Stitch worked in blue, gold and green yarn

Materials for this Tutorial:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Pima Cotton Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn. It is a worsted weight yarn. The hook shown in the video below is a 5 mm birchwood crochet hook by Rowan Yarns.  However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose.

Thank you so much for stopping by! If you enjoy the tutorial below, be sure to also check out some of the many other crochet stitch tutorials on my site and pin this for later! You may wish to start with the Long Spiked V Stitch | How to Crochet.

Dc – Double Crochet

Hdc – Half Double Crochet

Rpt – Repeat

Sc – Single Crochet

Sk – Skip

Sl St – Slip Stitch

Yo – Yarn Over

Notes:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial.  You may work the stitch in one colour or many.  I will be working the design in three colours: A, B, C.

To begin, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains.  For this stitch pattern you will need a multiple of six stitches for your foundation chain, plus 2 (multiples of 6 + 2).

For example, with colour A, ch 26.

Row One:

Dc in the 4th ch from your hook, *ch 2, sk the next 2 sts, dc in each of the next 4 sts; Rpt from * across ending with a dc in each of the final 2 sts.  Ch 1, turn.

Row Two:

Work 1 sc in each st and 2 sc in each ch-sp all the way across.  Join colour B in the final st.  With colour B, ch 2, turn.

Row Three:

*Dc in the next st, long dc over each of the next 2 sts working into the 2 skipped sts 2 rows below, dc in the next st, ch 2, sk the next 2 sts; Rpt from * across, hdc in the final st.  Ch 1, turn.

Row Four:

Work 1 sc in each st and 2 sc in each ch-2 sp across.  Join colour C in the final st.  With colour C, ch 3, turn.

Row Five:

*Dc in the next st, ch 2, sk the next 2 sts, dc in the next st, long dc over the next 2 sts working into the skipped sts 2 rows below; Rpt from * across ending with a dc in each of the final 2 sts.  Ch 1, turn.

Row Six:

Work 1 sc in each st and 2 sc in each ch-2 sp across.  Join colour A in the final st.  With colour A, ch 2, turn.

And that’s it!

From here work rows 3-6 alternating your colours A, B, C every two rows as per the pattern above.  Fasten off and weave in your ends.
