Welcome to Rich Textures Crochet and the Crazy for Cables crochet along where we will learn to make a beautiful cabled blanket.
I love working crochet cables. They give your project a beautiful and intricate texture and look so cozy. Crochet cables, however, can be complicated and daunting to work. If you are new to working crochet cables, learning to work cables in a crochet along alongside others therefore makes them a little more easier and fun!
In the Crazy for Cables crochet along this year we will learn to work five cable designs. These designs will be worked into blanket squares and then joined at the end to make a beautiful cabled blanket. It’s one that you will love to display in your own home or give as a gift.
If you have been following Rich Textures Crochet for a while now, you may know that I periodically host free crochet alongs here on Rich Textures Crochet! I aim to host at least three of them throughout the year. During the winter months in the Northern hemisphere I usually host a larger project such as a blanket. Last year I hosted the Make it Your Way Blanket Crochet Along.
In the Spring and Summer months you can look forward to the Marvellous Market Bag Crochet Along that I host annually in May and the Wonderful Hats Crochet Along that I typically host in August. If you would like to catch a glimpse at how these crochet alongs are run, be sure to check them out by clicking on their links above or by heading to the “Crochet Alongs” tab in the menu. All of the patterns included in my crochet alongs remain free to follow here on Rich Textures Crochet (this one is no exception!) so you are free to work on them at your own pace.
How the Crochet Along Works:
This Crazy for Cables Crochet Along will run from February 7th – March 13th. I will post the schedule below. During this time I will post one new crochet cable blanket square pattern here on Rich Textures Crochet each week on the Wednesday. You will make four of each square throughout the week each week. By the end of week five, you will have a total of 20 blanket squares that we will then join together in week six. My finished blanket measured approximately 52 x 62 inches.
Choose your Yarn and Colours:
For this Crazy for Cables Crochet Along I recommend a medium/worsted weight yarn. I will be using the Pound of Love yarn by Lion Brand. It is a 100% acrylic yarn and each ball is about 1020 yards/932 meters or 16oz/454g. I decided to use two colours (each week I worked two squares in each). Colour A was Olive and I used about 2.5 balls. Colour A was Antique White and I used a little less than two balls. In total I used about 4600 yards of yarn. Feel free to work the blanket all as one colour or in two or more, it’s really up to you.
Along with the yarn, you will need a 5mm (H/8) crochet hook. In the video tutorials you will see me using a Wooden Streamline hook by Furls Crochet. Another favourite is the Clover Soft Touch crochet hook.
The Blanket Squares:
As mentioned, each blanket square pattern released each week will feature a different crochet cable pattern. Every pattern will include written and video instructions! Each week you will work four squares in each pattern. Each square will be finished off with a simple single crochet edging that will make it easier to crochet the squares into one blanket at the end in week six. The blanket squares are as follows:
FEBRUARY 7: WEEK ONE – NARROW CABLES
FEBRUARY 14: WEEK TWO – CRINKLE CABLES
FEBRUARY 21: WEEK THREE – ROPE CABLES
FEBRUARY 28: WEEK FOUR – LATTICE CABLES
MARCH 5: WEEEK FIVE – WINDING CABLES
MARCH 13: WEEK SIX – JOIN YOUR SQUARES TOGETHER AND BLANKET EDGING
As you are working on your blanket you can post your photos and questions in the Rich Textures Crochet Community Group on Facebook or tag RichTexturesCrochet across your social platform of choice. Others will be doing the same and it will be fun and exciting to see how everyones blankets are turning out!

PDF Copies of the Patterns:
The crochet afghan square patterns will be posted here on my website and on my YouTube Channel for free. They will forever remain here for free even after the crochet along has ended.
I realize though that some of you wish to work from an ad free PDF. This year for the blanket crochet along I will provide one PDF for the entire Crazy for Cables Blanket at the start of the crochet along on February 7th. This single PDF will be available for purchase in my Etsy and Ravelry Shops and the PDF will include all five blanket square patterns. The PDF will also remain for sale in my shops long after the crochet along event has ended.
