Hello and welcome to Week One of the Spring Blossom Throw Crochet Along! Today we will crochet the first square: the Primrose Crochet Afghan Square!

The Primrose is often one of the first spring flowers that we see available for sale in the stores around me.  They are a popular little flower to adorn table centrepieces, or a sunny windowsill.  And one can see why! They are a happy, hopeful looking flower with bright blooms that will bloom continuously for a while.

The stitch pattern used in today’s crochet afghan square is called the Primrose Stitch.  It is an easy stitch design.  It does not have a heavy texture and looks almost the same on both sides of the finished fabric.

The pattern itself is a two row repeat.  It is made up of chain, single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet stitches.

Let’s Crochet!

Primrose Crochet Afghan Square:

Skill Level: Easy

Gauge: 18 Sts x 8 rows of pattern = 4 inches

Finished Size: This square measures approximately 10 x 10 inches.  The finished blanket measures approximately 52 x 62 inches.

Yarn (For the total Project):

Approximately 6 balls of Colour A: Grey Heather (Caron Simply Soft Heathers by Yarnspirations (%100 acrylic; 141 g / 5 oz, 228 meters / 250 yards; Worsted Weight)

Approximately 5 balls of Colour C: Off White (Caron Simply Soft by Yarnspirations (%100 acrylic; 170 g / 6 oz, 288 meters / 315 yards; Worsted Weight) 

Hook: Size H/8 (5.0 mm). Adjust hook size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.

Notions: Yarn Needle, scissors.

Pattern Notes:

• This crochet afghan square will measure approximately 10 x 10 inches.  To change the size of this square you will need a foundation chain with a multiple of 3 + 2 stitches.
• You will make 5 squares in off white, 1 square in grey heather.
• This pattern is worked in rows.
• Ch 1 at the beginning of a row does not count as a stitch
• Ch 3 at the beginning of a row counts as a double crochet stitch

Stitches and Abbreviations:

Ch – Chain

Dc – Double Crochet

Hdc – Half double crochet

Rpt – Repeat

Sc – Single Crochet

Sk – Skip

Sl St – Slip Stitch

Tr – Triple Stitch

Yo – Yarn Over

Free Pattern:

Ch 45

Row 1: Hdc in the 2nd ch from hook, sk the next ch, [Sc, ch 2, sc] in the next st, * skip next 2 chs, [sc, ch 2, sc] in next ch, repeat from * across, ending with 1 hdc in last ch, turn.

Row 2: Ch 3, * 3 dc in next ch-2 space (shell), repeat from * across, ending with dc in final st, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, hdc in the first st, * [sc, ch 2, sc] in 2nd dc of next shell, repeat from * across, ending with hdc in top of ch-3, turn.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until work from the beginning measures approximately 10 inches ending on a row 2.  Fasten off and weave in your ends.

Edging (worked in a round):

(NOTE: You may change the number of stitches that you have in your edging, just make sure that it is consistent with all squares.  You will NOT necessarily work in each stitch, or for some of the squares you may need to work two stitches in a stitch.)

With right side facing, join yarn with a sl st in the top right corner.

Rnd 1: Ch 1,  work 39 sc evenly across, 3 sc in the corner st, work 39 sc in across, 3 sc in the corner st, evenly work 39 sc across, 3 sc in the corner st, work 39 sc across, 3 sc in the final corner st, join with a sl st in the 1st st. 

Fasten off, weave in ends.  Block if desired.

REPEAT THIS PATTERN FOR THE TOTAL OF SIX SQUARES.
