Hello and welcome to Rich Textures Crochet! Today we are going to crochet the beautiful Rivers Shawl, a crochet shawl made with Mandala Tweed yarn by Lion Brand.

Not too long ago I was approached by YarnCanada.ca to know if I would be interested in reviewing a new product on their shelves.  How could I pass up the opportunity to play with new yarn??

Lion Brand Mandala Tweed:

They were generous to send me a couple cakes of the Lion Brand Mandala Tweed yarn in the colour of my choice to test.

The yarn is beautiful! YarnCanada has three colours to choose from: Dice, Seven and Lucky Penny.  I instantly connected with the Lucky Penny!

Mandala Tweed Yarn

My first impression of the yarn, (after enjoying the colours!) was that it felt very light weight and almost reminded me of a cotton.  It’s very soft! The cake features gradual colour changes and caries a couple of colours along side each other all the way through.

Yarn info and Specs:

The cakes are a generous 568 yards which makes it a great choice for those larger projects like shawls and blankets.  Although when working with it I found that the yarn did split easily, it was easy to unravel or frog if I needed too!

It is a medium/worsted weight (#4) yarn, 100% acrylic.

Easy Crochet Shawl

Over all, I really like the yarn and, yes, I would definitely use it again.  I think it would be gorgeous in a blanket although I have had a poncho pattern swimming around in my head that I think it will work well for too! So who knows! If you have a preference, blanket or poncho, let me know in the comments.  I can’t decide!

The Rivers Shawl:

Onto the Rivers Shawl crochet pattern!

Easy Crochet Shawl1

This pattern requires two cakes although you will not use all of the second cake.  It does give you the option of making your shawl one to two inches wider if you desire.  The pattern is comprised of a variety of basic stitches including single, half double, double and triple crochet stitches.  It works up moderately quickly.

Shawl Details:

The shawl is a rectangle, and the simple shell edging is worked only on the two shorter ends.

I hope you like it! As always, I will include a video tutorial at the end of the written crochet pattern.  If you would like to share photos, or show me other projects you’ve made with the Mandala Tweed yarn, be sure to connect with me on Instagram and/or Facebook.  On Facebook you can also join the Rich Textures Crochet community group!

Why do the instructions say that
this is worked in rounds, do not turn, but then each line of the instructions
    say to turna/

    1. RichTexturesCrochet says:

      It’s a typo! Thanks! It’s now corrected

  2. Lea Serron says:

Beautiful pattern – I can’t wait to make this! I would like the finished garment to be approximately 64 inches, not including the shell edge.

Beautiful pattern – I can’t wait to make this! I would like the finished garment to be approximately 64 inches, not including the shell edge. I’m new to crochet so I’m unsure how long my foundation chain should be. Thank you!

    1. RichTexturesCrochet says:

You can add multiples of 16 stitches to the foundation chain to make it longer. I’d try adding 32 more chains and see if it’s the length you would like 🙂

  4. I have just started, am on row 12. I am a little worried, the edge of my shawl is not straight, and I am worried that I have made an error with tension. Should the edge be flat? Just need some insight. Thanks, Chrissy

    1. RichTexturesCrochet says:

The shorter side edges should be straight however the longer length of the shawl does have some wave

  5. Cathy infante says:

Should there be 225 single crochet stitches in rows 4 and 5? I have 211.

    1. RichTexturesCrochet says:

Yes there should be 225. In the previous row did you sc in each ch-1 space as well? You should sc in each stitch and ch-1 space 🙂

  6. Should it be 225 stitches on each row the whole way? I have pulled everything out a few times because I keep getting a fan shape

    1. RichTexturesCrochet says:

Yes there should be 225 stitches/chain spaces each row

  7. This is absolutely gorgeous! However, I have tried twice and I am not ending row three correctly (ending with the first triple. Looking at the pattern and the video I think I am doing everything correctly. Any ideas?!
    Love your videos! Thank you

    1. I am having the exact same problem. I think I’m just going to add 3 more rows at the beginning and see if that fixes it.

  8. Joan Perry says:

Love your work. I would love to have this as blanket or poncho—or both. Such great patterns & designs you continuously present on you web site for which I keep an icon on my home page. Thanks for all this great ‘stuff’!

    1. RichTexturesCrochet says:

I’m so glad you like it! Thank you so much for stopping by 🙂

  9. Hook In Hand says:

This is so pretty and I even think I have this yarn on hand. Love it thanks

  10. Joni Davis says:

This shawl is so beautiful! I’m making it as a birthday present. I have asked this question on the Facebook page, but I will try here. I don’t get 225 sts on rows 4 and 7 and their equivalents. Right now I’m on row 19 (7). I have figured out that there are 16 sts between the first triple crochet and the last chain one space before the next set of triple crochets. That works exactly right until the end of the row, where st 225 is in the first of the last 2 triple crochets. That means the sc in the last ch4 is stitch #226. I’m just not getting it.

  11. I’m thinking of using this pattern for one of the popular pocket shawl patterns. Would there be enough left from the second roll to make pockets?
Thanks for the pattern and introducing me to this yarn color. Looking at it in the ball I would have never chosen it for a project but it’s beautiful!

    1. RichTexturesCrochet says:

I really don’t know – it would depend on the size of the pockets and stitch. Most of the second roll will be used. To play it safe, I would grab and extra 🙂

      1. Ok, thanks. I just didn’t know how much of the second toll would be used so this helps. Thx!

  13. Love this and want to make it. I am not getting it right either. If you chain 226 and start your first single crochet in the second chain from hook wouldn’t that make 224 stitches total?

    1. Nope sorry. Bad math. It is 225.

  14. This proceeding very well now. Thank you for the super lovely pattern! Using Mandala Horseshoe.

  15. Love this pattern and yarn. I’m making three for gifts and am on my second one now. They’re beautiful! I purchased the pattern!

  16. Do you by change know what color mandala tweed stripe the original pictures is made with? I keep looking at different sites with the cakes and I don’t feel that I’m seeing this particular color palette. Thank you.

  17. Hi, I was just wondering If you used multiples of anything, since for one project I’d like the base stitching shorter, and a different one I’d like it longer

  18. Such a shame they discontinued this colour on

    1. RichTexturesCrochet says:

It is! It was one of my favourites!

  19. Lorraine Kruse says:

Just wondering if this pattern is done in multiples as I would like use a larger hook with the yarn that I have. Thank you in advance

    1. RichTexturesCrochet says:

It can! The multiples are 16 + 2

      1. Lorraine Kruse says:

        Thank you

  20. I am very new to crochet but found this pattern and decided to GO FOR IT! I am using a lighter weight yarn (Mandala) but using two strands at a time. I am also making it into a blanket rather than a shawl. I love the pattern and the way it makes gentle waves, just like a river! I am having difficulty with stitch count and have started over several times but think that I’ve got the hang of it now. Stitch markers really help me. Thank you for the pattern and it’s turing out really lovely!

  21. I have loved this shawl forever. I finally made it with Michael’s Barcelona Big, which has the look of the Mandala Tweed. It is a “5” weight instead of an”4, but it doesn’t feel like it. I will try to attach the photo. Not as beautiful as yours, but I like it. I bought the Mandala tweed because I would like to try it again!

  22. Hi, would this work well with Mandala Ombre yarn ?

    1. RichTexturesCrochet says:

      Yes it would 🙂

  23. Anne Knowles says:

I love this pattern but I am working a small sample and cannot get the “sc in each stitch and ch-1 space” right. When I do that I end up with five more stitches (in my short sample) than I started with. (I’m a beginner crocheter.) Thanks for your help.

  24. Sylina Ann says:

How many stitches are in row 3 & 6?

  25. I have extended this pattern to 290. Does that mean the rest of the rows should have 289? It is a beautiful pattern and I want to get it right.
