Are you looking for a fall hat with the perfect slouchiness? You might just want to try this crochet pattern for the Falling Leaves Slouch Hat!

I am not going to lie, I love slouch hats and I love working with wool and wool blends.  And I am in love with this hat.

And it is also my birthday!

So, what better way is there to celebrate than to release a crochet pattern for a slouch hat made with a unique and colourful 100% wool?

Of course, I will say it right now, you do not need to use a pure wool or even a wool blend for this pattern, a medium worsted weight acrylic will do!

The Yarn:

The yarn that I used was actually gifted me this past Spring by my Dad (thank you, Dad!).  He stopped by Woolies of Upperbrook Farm (https://www.woolies.ca) which is actually a farm/yarn shop located in the village that I grew up in, and picked up some of their gorgeous hand painted yarn.  The wool is spun by Briggs & Little Woolen Mills (https://briggsandlittle.com) and available in a variety of unique colours.

I love the feel of working with wool, I don’t even mind a minimally processed wool – there is just something wonderful about the way that it glides on my wooden crochet hooks.  It’s such a pleasure to use (As long as you don’t suffer from allergies or sensitivities!)

The Hat:

Now, to the hat!

I have called this the “Falling Leaves Slouch” simply because of the clusters that make up the body of the hat.  When worked up in the yarn, they really reminded of the colourful falling leaves that we will be admiring here soon in Canada.

The hat is worked from the bottom up, the brim being worked in rows while the body of the hat is worked in rounds.  I paired the medium worsted weight yarn with a 6.5mm crochet hook.

Falling Leaves Slouch Hat:

Skill Level: Easy

Gauge: 3 clusters x 7 rows = 4 inches.

Finished Size: Approximately 13 x 9 inches laid flat, 20-21 inch circumference at hat opening.

Yarn: Heritage by Briggs & Little Woolen Mills for Woolies of Upperbrook Farm (100% wool; 4 oz; 215 yds/197 m); 2 ply/Medium worsted weight (#4), 1 Skein 

Hook: Size K/10.5 (6.5 mm). Adjust hook size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.

Notions: Yarn Needle

Stitches and Abbreviations:

Blo – Back Loop Only

Ch – Chain

CL – Cluster – Double Crochet Four Together in the stitches indicated.

Dc – Double Crochet

Dc2tog – Double Crochet Two Stitches Together

Hdc – Half Double Crochet

Rpt – Repeat

Sk – Skip

Sl St – Slip Stitch

Yo – Yarn Over

Pattern Notes:

• Pattern is written in American English terms.
• Brim is worked in rows, body of hat is worked in rounds.
• Ch 1 at beginning of row does not count as stitch.
• Weave in ends as needed.
• OPTIONAL – Add pompom to the top.

Free Crochet Pattern:

Brim (Worked in rows):

Ch 8.

Row 1: Sl st in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.  Ch 1, turn.  (7 sl sts)

Row 2: Working in the blo, sl st in each st across.  Ch 1, turn.  (7 sl sts)

Continue to repeat row 2 until work from the beginning measures approximately 19 inches.

Do not fasten off, but fold brim of hat so that two shorter ends meet. Now working through both thicknesses, sl st across working through the blo on each side. Do not fasten off, turn work right side out (so that the right side is facing you).

Now working around the edge of the brim, continue working in rounds as follows:

Hat Body (Worked in rounds):

Rnd 1: Ch 1, evenly work 82 hdc all the way around.  Join with a sl st in the first st, do not turn.  (82 sts)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, working in the 3rd loop, hdc in each st all the way around.  Join with a sl st in the first st, do not turn.  (82 sts)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in the 1st st, * ch 3, CL over the next 4 sts, ch 1, sc in the next st; rpt from * around ending with a ch 1, join with a sl st in the first st.  Turn.  (16 CL)

Rnd 4: Ch 5, * sc in the next CL, ch 3, CL in the next ch-3 sp, ch 1; rpt from * around to the first sc, dc in the base of ch-5.  Turn.  (16 CL)

Rnd 5: Ch 1, * sc in the next CL, ch 3, CL in the next ch-3 sp, ch 1; rpt from * around to the last st, ch 1, join with a sl st in the first sc.  Turn.

Rnds 6-7: Repeat rounds 4 and 5 once more.

Rnd 8: Repeat round 4.

Rnd 9: Ch 1, evenly work 78 hdc all the way around.  Join with a sl st in the first st.  Do not turn.  (78 hdc)

Rnd 10: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each of the next 3 sts, dc2tog over the next 2 sts, * dc in each of the next 4 sts, dc2tog; rpt from * around, join with a sl st in the first st.  Do not turn. (65 sts)

Rnd 11: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each of the next 2 sts, dc2tog over the next 2 sts, * dc in each of the next 3 sts, dc2tog; rpt from * around, join with a sl st in the first st.  Do not turn. (52 sts)

Rnd 12:  Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each of the next 1 st, dc2tog over the next 2 sts, * dc in each of the next 2 sts, dc2tog; rpt from * around, join with a sl st in the first st.  Do not turn.  (39 sts)

Rnd 13: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc2tog over the next 2 sts, * dc in the next st, dc2tog; rpt from * around, join with a sl st in the first st.  Do not turn.  (26 sts)

Rnd 14: Ch 2, dc in the next st (counts as dc2tog), dc2tog all the way around; join with a sl st in the first st, do not turn.  (12 sts)

Rnd 15: Repeat and 14.  (6 sts)

Fasten off leaving a long tail.  Using the long tail, sew the top of the hat closed. Fasten off and weave in your ends.
