The Embossed Shell Stitch is a stunning crochet stitch that features a beautiful texture that really stands out when worked in multiple colours.

It’s one of those stitches that you will never forget.  That being said, it does have a lot of steps! The repeat of the pattern is eight rows, but the results are well worth it!

A Textured Shell Crochet Stitch worked in white, pink and purple yarns

Isn’t it beautiful? I could see this stitch being used in so many projects – from blankets to shawls, maybe even a hand bag!

Materials for this Tutorial:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Pima Cotton Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn in three different colours. It is a worsted weight yarn. The hook shown in the video below is a 5 mm birchwood crochet hook by Rowan Yarns.  However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose, even experiment with colour!Thank you so much for stopping by! Notes:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial.  You may work the stitch in one colour or many.  I will be working the design in three colours: Colours A, B, and C.

To begin, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains.  For this stitch pattern you will need a multiple of twelve stitches plus two stitches for your foundation chain (multiples of 12+2).

For example, with colour A, ch 38

Row One:

Sc in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each of the next 3 sts, *sk the next 2 sts, 5 dc in the next st, sk the next 2 sts, sc in each of the next 7 sts sts; rpt from * across, sc in each of the final 4 sts.  Ch 1, turn.

Row Two:

Sc in the first st, *sc in each of the next 2 sts, sk the next st, [bpdc in the next dc, dc in the space between the next 2 sts] 4 times, bpdc in the next dc, sk the next sc, sc in each of the next 3 sts; rpt from * across.  Ch 1, turn.

Row Three:

Sc in the 1st st, *sc in the next st, sk the next st, [fpdc in the next dc, dc in the space between the next 2 sts, dc in the space between the next 2 sts] 4 times, fpdc over the next st, sk the next sc, sc in each of the next 2 sts; rpt from * across.  Ch 1, turn.

Row Four:

Sc in the 1st st, sk the next st * fpsc in each of the next 13 sts, sk the next sc, sc in the next st; rpt from * across.  Ch 3, turn.  (Switch to new colour if desired)

Row Five:

3 dc in the 1st st 4 rows below, * sk the next 3 sts, sc in each of the next 7sts, sk the next 3 sts, working over top of the next sc work 5 dc in the middle sc 4 rows below; rpt from * across, sc in each of the next 7sts, sk the next 3 sts, 3 dc in the final sc 4 rows below, dc in the top of the final st.  Ch 3, turn.

Row Six:

Sk the 1st st, [dc in the space between the next 2 sts, bpdc in the next st] 2 times, * sk the next sc, sc in each of the next 5 sts, [bpdc in the next st, dc in the space between the next 2 sts] 4 times, bpdc in the next st; rpt from * across, sc in each of the next 5 sts, [bpdc in the next st, dc in the space between the next to sts] 2 times, dc in the top of the turning ch.  Ch 3, turn.

Row Seven:

[Dc in the space between the next 2 sts, dc in the next sp, fpdc in the next st] twice, * sk the next sc, sc in each of the next 3 sc, [fpdc in the next st, dc in the next sp, dc in the next sp] 4 times, fpdc in the next st; rpt from * across, sk the next sc, sc in each of the next 3 sc, [fpdc in the next st, dc in the next sp, dc in the next sp] 2 times, dc in the top of the turning ch.  Ch 1, turn.

Row Eight:

Sc in the 1st st, fpsc in each of the next 6 sts, * sk the next sc, sc in the next st, fpsc in the next 13 sts; rpt from * across, sk the next sc, sc in the next st, fpsc in each of the next 6 sts, sc in the top of the turning ch.  Ch 1, turn. (Switch to new colour if desired)

Row Nine:

Sc in the 1st st, * sc in each of the next 3 sts, 5 dc in the same sp as the middle sc four rows below, sk the next 3 sts, sc in each of the next 4 sts; rpt from * across. Ch 1, turn.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern you will repeat rows 2-9 alternating through your colours A, B, and C.  I recommend that you end on a row 8.
