This crochet beanie is perfect for the beginner crocheter! Even if you have been crocheting for a long time, you will enjoy its simplicity.

I have worked this crochet beanie in a super bulky weight yarn which makes it quick to work up and easy to hang onto.  It uses basic crochet stitches which makes it easy to learn and once you get the hang of the pattern you can easily make it again and again.  If you like this easy crochet hat, you may also wish to explore the Easy Winter Beanie Free Crochet Pattern.

An easy colourful crochet beanie

Beanie Construction:

This Beginner Beanie is made from the bottom (brim) up.  It is worked in rounds and at the end of each round you will join your last stitch with the first stitch using a slip stitch.  As mentioned above, the pattern uses basic stitches including single crochet and half double crochet stitches.  When you get to the top of your beanie you will work “decrease rounds” which use a half double crochet two stitches together.  These stitches are explained in the pattern below an demonstrated in the free video tutorial following the pattern.

You can change the size of those beanie! The instructions below are for an adult size beanie, but if you would like to change the size of your beanie you can use the chart below to find your approximate measurements and size.  Then chain your foundation chain to the number of stitches that are needed for the desired circumference.  Work to the desired height and then start your decrease rounds.  Occasionally, for example if you are working a baby size, you may wish to skip some of the decrease rounds in order to reach the proper height.

The Materials:

For this crochet beanie I will be using a super bulky weight yarn.  In the photos you will see me working with a Wool Ease Thick & Quick yarn by Lion Brand.  You do not have to use this yarn or the colour to work your beanie.  All you need is about 100 yards of a super bulky weight yarn, just look for the little number six inside the ball of yarn on your yarn label.  Another good option is Bernat Chunky by Yarnspirations.

Along with the super bulky weight yarn I am using an 8 mm crochet hook.  In the video tutorial I am using a custom handmade hook.  If you would like to try out a wooden hook I recommend the Wooden Streamline Hooks by Furls Crochet.
