Every once in a while I like to spruce up my dishcloths and add some fresh ones to my stash! If you’re like me, this free easy crochet dishcloth pattern will be perfect!

I few days ago I was washing my dishes and found myself thinking to myself about how I really should retire some of the old and worn out ones.  Doing so though meant that I would need some replacements.

Naturally I headed to my yarn stash where I always have lots of crochet cotton on hand and chose some of my brighter colours including these blues and greens, and set to work.

I recently learned how to crochet the herringbone half double and double crochet stitches.  I not only loved the different look and variation that the herringbone added to these typically ordinary looking stitches.  I also liked the herringbone variations because it results in a more tightly worked stitch that I felt would hold up well to some tough scrubbing in the kitchen.

The Dishcloth:

These dishcloths are quick to make up following an easy pattern.  This means that they would also be a great contender in upcoming craft sales and last minute gifts for friends and family.

Around the outside edges, I worked a reverse single crochet stitch which again makes them a little bit tougher and adds a textured corded edging to the final project.

Easy Herringbone Dishcloth:

Skill Level: Beginner

Gauge:  16 Sc x 16 rows = 4 inches

Finished Size: Approximately 6 x 7 inches

Yarn: Approximately 40 yards of your favourite worsted (Medium/#4) crochet cotton.

Hook: 6 mm (US J/10) Crochet Hook

Notions: Yarn Needle

 

Stitches and Abbreviations:

Ch – Chain

HHdc – Herringbone Half Double Crochet (Yarn over, insert hook in the stitch indicated, yarn over and draw up a loop, draw the loop just made through the first loop on your hook.  Yarn over and pull through the final two loops on your hook.)

Lp – loop 

Rpt – Repeat

Rsc – Reverse Single Crochet – working from left to right (instead of right to left), work an sc in the previous st.

Sk – Skip 

Sl st – Slip stitch

Sp – space

Sps – spaces

Yo – Yarn over

 

Pattern Notes:

• Pattern is written in American English terms.
• Pattern is worked in rows.
• Ch 1 at beginning of row does not count as a Sc.
• Weave in ends as needed

 

Free Crochet Pattern:

Ch 21.

Row 1: HHdc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each st across.  Turn.  (20 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1, HHdc in the first st and in each st across.  Turn. (20 sts)

Rows 3-16: Rpt row 2.  Do not fasten off.

Edging (Worked in a round):

Rnd 1: Ch 1, rsc in each st across, work 2 rsc in the corner st, evenly work 18 rsc along rough edge, work 2 rsc in the corner st, rsc in each st across, evenly work 18 rsc along the rough edge, work 1 rsc in the final corner st.  Join with a sl st in the first st.

Fasten off.  Weave in ends.
