If you’re looking for an easy Tunisian crochet project to get your feet wet with, you may have just found it!

When Valentine’s Day rolls around in our house I like to find little themed items to make the day all the more festive.  This year I decided to try my hand at a little more Tunisian Crochet and make a set of coasters (or mug rugs) and a pot holder for my home.

This set works up relatively quickly and you can use your favourite brand of worsted weight crochet cotton.

The coasters are made using the Tunisian Simple stitch, which, if you are new to this technique, this is a great first stitch to start with.  The heart on the front side of the coasters and hot pad is simply cross stitched on.

This pattern includes the written instructions as well as a graph to assist you in cross stitching the heart.  A video tutorial is also available on YouTube and can be found here:

Pattern:

Skill Level: Easy

Gauge: 13 tss x 12 rows = 4 inches

Finished Size: Coasters: 4.5 x 4 inches

                         Pot Holder: 6.5 x 7 inches

Yarn: 

          For one coaster: Approximately 25 Yards of your favourite worsted weight crochet cotton for the main colour.  For cross stitch heart you will need approximately 3 Yards of a contrasting colour.

For Pot Holder: Approximately 100 Yards of your favourite worsted weight crochet cotton for the main colour.  For cross stitch heart you will need approximately 3 Yards of a contrasting colour.

Hook: Size 6mm Tunisian Crochet Hook, 5 mm crochet hooks

Notions: Yarn Needle.

Stitches and Abbreviations:

Ch – Chain
Lp – loop
Lps – loops
Rpt – Repeat
Sc – Single Crochet
Sk – Skip
Sl st – Slip stitch
Tss – Tunisian simple Stitch
Yo – Yarn over

Pattern Notes:

  • Pattern is written in American English terms.
  • Pattern is worked in rows.
  • Weave in ends as needed.
  • All rows are worked with the right side facing.
  • Each coaster and Pot Holder is made with two sides which are crocheted together.

CoasterPattern:

(Make 2)

With 6 mm Tunisian crochet hook, Ch 14.

Row 1: Working in the back bumps of chain, draw up a loop in the 2nd ch from hook and in each across leaving all loops on hook. (14 loops on hook)

Row 1 return: Yo, draw through 1st lp on hook, *yo, draw through 2 lps on hook, rep from * until 1 lp rem on hook.

Row 2: *Insert hook from right to left under next vertical bar, yo and draw through, keeping lp on hook, rep from * across.  (14 loops on hook)

Row 2 return: Rep row 1 return.

Rows 3-10: Rep row 2 (inc. return row) for 8 more rows (a total of 10 rows).

To bind off: (working right to left) * sl st in next vertical bar, rpt from * to end.  Fasten off, weave in ends.

Make second square.

Using the chart provided, find the Center of the square and cross stitch the Heart design on one square.

Now holding two wrong sides together, using 5 mm crochet hook, join yarn with a sl st in any st along edge and working through both thicknesses work 1 Sc in each st or row around, and 3 Sc in each corner.  Fasten off and weave in ends.

Pot Holder Pattern:

(Make 2)

With 6 mm Tunisian crochet hook, Ch 24.

Row 1: Working in the back bumps of chain, draw up a loop in the 2nd ch from hook and in each across leaving all loops on hook. (24 loops on hook)

Row 1 return: Yo, draw through 1st lp on hook, *yo, draw through 2 lps on hook, rep from * until 1 lp rem on hook.

Row 2: *Insert hook from right to left under next vertical bar, yo and draw through, keeping lp on hook, rep from * across.  (24 loops on hook)

Row 2 return: Rep row 1 return.

Rows 3-20: Rep row 2 (inc. return row) for 18 more rows (a total of 20 rows).

To bind off: (working right to left) * sl st in next vertical bar, rpt from * to end.  Fasten off, weave in ends.

Make second square.

Using the chart provided, find the Center of the square and cross stitch the Heart design on one square.

Now holding two wrong sides together, using 5 mm crochet hook, join yarn with a sl st in any st along edge and working through both thicknesses work 1 Sc in each st or row around, and 3 Sc in each corner.  Fasten off.

To make hanger join yarn with a sl st in the top right corner, ch 6, join with a sl st in the next st on Pot Holder.  Turn, now work across ch, sl st in each ch across, join with a sl st in the first joining sl st.  Fasten off and weave in ends.
