There is something really peaceful about the forest in the Wintertime. Maybe it’s because many of the birds have taken off to warmer climates, maybe it’s because the freshly fallen snow provides an insulating blanket, or maybe it’s because of the absence of leaves rustling in the breeze – whatever the reason, it’s quieter. I love it.

As long as the snow isn’t too deep and the wind too bitterly cold it can be a great place to go in the winter. The kids love to look for deer and rabbit tracks (they get even more excited if they find some droppings to go along with them!). The dog loves to bury his nose in the snow and follow the most interesting scent trail. And I just like to breathe in the crisp air, and enjoy the woody colour tones and textures against the white freshly fallen snow.

This is the setting in which these hats and the triangle scarf was designed.

You’ll find below the patterns for the Messy Bun Hat with a Beanie option. A Slouch option will be posted in a separate post soon, but I will try to also link it back here. If you would like to check out the At the Woods Triangle Scarf Pattern you can follow the link here:

You’ll love these hats! They are designed to be seamless, and if you know how to chain, do a single crochet and a half double crochet, you’ll be able to make these hats! You’ll only need one Caron Tea Cake or about 200 yards of your favourite super bulky weight yarn, and an 8 mm crochet hook.

The pattern will be printed out in its entirety below, but if you would like to purchase a PDF copy ($2.00 CAD) or add it to your Etsy or Ravelry favourites you can find them here:

Pattern:

Hat Brim (worked in rows):

Ch 6.

Row 1: 1 sc in the second ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (5 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1, working in the back loop only, sc in each sc across. Turn. (5 sts)

Rows 3-36: Repeat row 2 for 34 more rows. Do not turn, do not fasten off.

Now you are going to sew the two ends of your brim together. Being careful not to twist, holding both ends of the brim together and working through both thickness, place in sc across (5 sts). Do not fasten off.

Turn work so that you are now working around the edge of the brim of the hat. Please continue as follows, working in rounds:

Rnd 1: With right side facing, hdc 42 evenly around. Do not join. (42 sts)

Rnd 2: Now working in the 3rd loop, simply jump up to the first stitch of the next round (pull your yarn a little tighter to close the gap, mark this stitch), in the 3rd loop hdc in each st around. Do not Join. (42 sts)

Rnds 3-8 – Repeat rnd 2 remembering to move stitch marker up as work progresses.

Hi Karen, I took a look at the pattern you commented on and can’t seem to find what you are referring to? In other patterns I refer to the knit stitch (ks) which is also known as the waistcoat stitch.
