Learn how to crochet this New Shell Stitch with its wonderful double sided texture and eye catching pattern!
The New Shell stitch pattern features a couple of my favourite basic crochet stitches: half double crochet and slip stitches!
It’s true, slip stitches are not everyone’s favourite stitch to work. But when worked in this pattern combined with the half double crochet stitches, you will find that they are not too tight and much easier to work into!
I am loving the texture in this pattern. It is double sided with a beautiful wavy design. As the pattern is made up of half double crochet stitches and slip stitches it does take a little longer to work up, but it’s well worth the persistence.
You could use this New Shell Stitch pattern in almost any project and in any yarn weight.

The Materials:
For this tutorial today, I will be using a small amount of Heatherly by KnitPicks and WeCrochet in a single colour. You are also able to work this stitch in a single colour or more. The Heatherly yarn is a medium/worsted weight yarn that is a wool blend. Along with my worsted weight yarn, I will also be working with a 5 mm (H/8) crochet hook.

Pattern Notes:
This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial and it may be worked in one colour or many. I will be working this pattern in a single colour.
This pattern is written in American crochet terms.
The turning ch does not count as a stitch.
To begin, make a slip knot and make a foundation chain. For this stitch pattern, you will need a foundation chain with a multiple of 4 stitches, plus 2.
For example, ch 30.
Row One:
Sl st in the 2nd ch from your hook, 3 hdc in the next st, *sk the next 2 chs, sl st in the next st, 3 hdc in the next st; Rpt from * across. Ch 1, turn.
Row Two:
3 hdc in the 1st st, *sk the next 2 sts, sl st in the next st, 3 hdc in the next st; Rpt from * across to the final 4 sts, sk the next 2 sts, sl st in the next, hdc in the final st. Ch 1, turn.
Row Three:
Sl st in the 1st st, 3 hdc in the next st, *sk the next 2 sts, sl st in the next st, 3 hdc in the next st; Rpt from * across to the final 3 sts, sk the next 2 sts, sl st in the final st. Ch 1, turn.
And that’s it!
For the rest of the pattern simply repeat rows two and three for the pattern. Fasten off and weave in your ends.
