A Scottish hap is a thick shawl (sometimes used as a blanket!).  It is constructed as a square and folded over on the diagonal to create a triangular shawl or wrap. There is a bit of Scottish in my blood.  It comes from my mothers side.  I have the reddish tint to my brown hair and vibrant freckles.  Growing up I was a competitive Highland Dancer – my family and I would travel to competitions across the Maritime provinces.  I played the snare drum in our local bag pipe band.  I learned occasional words of Gaelic and even as a teenager took up a bit of Scottish Country Dancing.

There is a bit of Scottish in my blood 🙂

When I came across the Scottish Hap online I fell in love.  There are lots of great blogs on them, and many more knitting patterns.  However I failed to find any crochet designs (If you know of some, please share!).

A traditional Scottish (Full) Hap is constructed as a square.  They were often used as a heavier weigh shawl, and at other times as a lapghan or baby blanket.  As a shawl what makes it unique is it’s square construction.

The center/body of the hap is usually a solid fabric, square in shape.  Then around that square it what I refer to as an extended simple lace edging.  They would be traditionally worked in wool, then stretched over a frame in order to block and stretch it.

These days haps come in a variety of colour, fibre and even shape.

The one that you will find below is worked as a square – the centre portion in rows using the moss stitch, while the outer wide edging is worked in rounds giving it a simple lace look.

I’ve selected Lion Brand’s Touch of Alpaca worsted weight yarn (You will need 5 Balls) because of the softness of it and its drape. For more information about this great yarn, see: Lion Brand Yarn. You will also need a 5mm crochet hook.

The pattern will be found in full below, but if you would like to save it to your library or purchase an ad free pdf, you may do so from my Ravelry and Etsy Shops:

I like this pattern too. It’s a nice change from the basic granny square patterns. Not that anything is wrong with them, but this one stands out because of its construction. Thanks for sharing it. I’m happy?

You’re welcome! I’m glad you like it 🙂

I have made the center square portion using the exact yarn and hook as recommended and it measures only 20 inches by 20 inches. (I started with a chain of 99 as directed.) Will mine be too small? I’m afraid to take it apart to start over and make it larger as the ruffle edging won’t go according to pattern – correct?
