The Not So Vintage Crochet Hot Pad Pattern is an extra thick crochet hot pad with a textured front and solid back.
The design is worked as two separate pieces that are then crocheted together. The front side is worked in a very thick fabric that is created using a spiked puff stitch. The puff stitch is a thick stitch on it’s own and is even more thick and dense when worked as a spike stitch.

Crochet Hot Pads are a useful item to have around your home! You will want to work this pattern in a 100% cotton yarn as it is the most durable when it comes to heat (still remember to be careful when using them in order to avoid burns!). Cotton comes in a variety of colours which also works well with this stitch pattern! The texture and stitches really stand out when worked in multiple colours as I have done here.
The Not So Vintage Hot Pad would be a great addition to your own kitchen! They also make great gifts and items to sell at craft fairs. If you are looking for a matching washcloth, I will have one available for you by the end of the week. It would make such a great gift set.
Materials:
For the Not so Vintage Hot Pad, I will be working with three colours of a worsted weight 100% cotton yarn. In the photos and in the video tutorial I am using the Pima Cotton Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn. It is super soft and 100% cotton. You will only need one partial ball of each to complete this pattern.
For this pattern you will also need a 5 mm crochet hook. In the video tutorial below I will be using a Birchwood Hook by Rowan Yarns.

The Not so Vintage Hot Pad Crochet Pattern:
Skill Level: Intermediate
Gauge: 15 stitches x 18 rows of puff stitch = 4 inches
Finished Size: Approximately 8 x 8 inches
Hook: Size H/8 (5 mm) hook.
Notions: Yarn Needle
Stitches and Abbreviations:
Ch – Chain
Dc – Double Crochet
Hdc – Half Double Crochet
Puff – Puff Stitch ([yo, insert your hook in the indicated st, yo and draw up a loop] 3 times. Yo and draw through all the loops on your hook. Puff St made)
Rpt – Repeat
Sc – Single Crochet
Sk – Skip
Sl st – Slip stitch
Yo – Yarn over
Pattern Notes:
- Pattern is written in American English terms.
- Pattern is worked in rows.
- Ch 1 at beginning of row does not count as stitch.
- Weave in ends as needed.
- Do not fasten off after each colour change. Instead, carefully carry your non working yarn up the side.
- To change the size of your blanket, you will need a stitch multiple of 3 + 1 stitches.
Free Crochet Pattern:
With Colour A, ch 30.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch and each across switching to colour B in the final st. With colour B, ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc in 1st st, ch 1, puff (see “stitches and abbreviations”) in the next, *ch 1, sk the next st, puff in next; rpt from * across, ending with a sc in the final st. Switch to colour C in the final st. With colour C, ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc in 1 st, *ch 1, sk the next puff st, in next skipped sc 2 rows below work puff; rpt from * across, sk the final puff, sc in final st and change to colour A, ch 1, turn.
Row 4: Sc in 1 st, ch 1, puff in next ch-1 sp 2 rows below, ch one, rpt from * across, working a final puff st in the final ch-1 sp two rows below, ch 1, sc in the final st changing colour. Ch 1, turn.
Row 5: Sc in 1st, ch 1, sk first puff, *puff in sp 2 rows below, ch 1, sk the next puff; Rpt from * across, skip the final puff, sc in the final st switching to your next colour. Ch 1, turn.
Repeat Rows 4 and 5 alternating through colours A, B and C until your work from the beginning measures approximately 7.5 inches. End on a colour A row.
Backing:
With Colour A, ch 30.
Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch and each across switching to colour B in the final st. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Hdc in the 1st st and in each st across. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 3 – 22: Repeat Row 2. Fasten off, weave in your ends.
Edging:
With Colour A, join yarn with a sl st in the top right corner. Holding both front and back together and working through both thicknesses, proceed as follows:
Rnd 1: Sc in each st across the top, 3 sc in the corner st, evenly work 27 sts along the side, 3 sc in the corner st, sc in each st across the bottom, 3 sc in the next corner st, evenly work 27 sts along the side, 2 sc in the final corner st. Join with a sl st in the first st.
Hanger:
Ch 10, turn, sl st in the next st on the edging, ch 1, turn. Sl st in each of the next 10 chs, sl st in the next st on the edging. Fasten off and weave in your ends.
