Hello Everyone and welcome to week three of the Great Canadian Landscapes Crochet Along! Today we continue our crochet journey across Canada in another favourite province of mine: Prince Edward Island!

Welcome to PEI!

Prince Edward Island (PEI) has always been a favourite place for me and my family to visit.  It is Canada’s smallest province both in terms of land mass and population and it is located in the Northumberland Strait between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.  Like Newfoundland, it is an island, but its landscape is very different!

The moment you either fly, take the ferry or even drive (via the Confederation Bridge) onto the shores of PEI you will be welcomed by its distinct island feel and red sand.  The island is home to many wonderful beaches, light houses, charming communities and cities.  For those fibre enthusiasts, PEI even has it’s own Fibre Trail! You can pick up the brochure at any tourist bureau and it will provide you with a map that you can follow across the island detailing all of the local yarn shops and farms! One summer I took the time to visit some of the shops on the trail and it was so much fun!

The Panel:

For the panel this week I have chosen a rusty red colour, representative of PEI’s unique red sand, and you will see that it is the only red panel in the blanket.  The stitch I have chosen is made up of soft shells which also really reminds me of the sand.  It is subtle in texture and really a fun stitch to work up!

The Pattern:

This panel measures approximately 43 x 9 inches.  Should you wish to change the size, use a chain multiple of 4 + 2.

For this project I used a worsted weight yarn by Mary Maxim in the colour Copper.  You may use any worsted weight yarn! (For more details, see the “Introduction and Materials” for the CAL linked in this post above.)

Hook: 5.5 mm

This pattern is worked in rows.

Stitches and Abbreviations:

Ch – Chain
Dc – Double Crochet
Rpt – Repeat
Sc – Single Crochet
Shell – Shell ([sc, ch 2, 4 dc] all in the same st)
Sl St – Slip Stitch
St – Stitch
Yo – Yarn over

To Begin:

Ch 146.

Row 1: Shell in the 2nd ch from hook, * sk next 3 sts, shell in the next st; Rpt from * across to the last 4 sts, sk next 3 sts, sc in the last st.  Turn.

Row 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in the first st, * shell in the next ch-2 sp; rpt from * across to the last ch-2 sp; sc in the last ch-2 sp.  Turn.

Row 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in the first st, * shell in the next ch-2 sp; rpt from * across to the turning ch-3 space, sc in the turning ch-3 space. Turn.

Repeat row 3 until work from the beginning measures approximately 9 inches (or a little less).

Edging:

Note: If you have changed the size of your blanket your will have to adjust the edging stitch counts accordingly.  What matters most is that each of your panels has the same number of stitches along the edges.  This will make it much easier to join them in the end! Also note that the starting chain for many of the panels is different, however they will all turn out the same size (as long as your gauge is the same) in the end.  Therefore when you work the edging you will not necessarily place 1 sc in each ch along the long edge, occasionally you will skip stitches, or even work 2 sc in a stitch.  What matters is that these stitches are spread out evenly across the panel.

The edging for each panel is a simple round of sc stitches.  Proceed as follows:

With the right side facing, join yarn with a sl st in the top right corner.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, evenly work 144 sc across the top of the panel, 3 sc in the corner st, evenly work 29 sc along the short edge, 3 sc in the corner st, evenly work 143 sc across the bottom of the panel, 3 sc in the corner st, evenly work 29 sc along the next short edge, 2 sc in the final corner st; join with a sl st in the first sc. (356 sc)

Fasten off, weave in ends.  Block if desired.

Video Tutorial:

Set this panel aside and get ready for next week! We will join them all together the final week.
