Looking for free winter hat crochet pattern round ups? Well with winter on it’s way and fall on our doorstep, no doubt you have begun to think about starting your winter apparel (if you haven’t already!). Here is a round up of the top free crochet patterns for winter beanies, slouch, messy bun hats and ear warmers by Rich Textures Crochet!
Whether you prefer to work with a worsted weight yarn or a super bulky, I have some options for you. I will categorize the patterns for you below according to the yarn weight and give you helpful information about things like whether or not they include a video tutorial! Super Bulky Weight Yarn for Winter Hat:
I love working with bulky and super bulky weight yarn, especially during the winter months. You can be sure we need the cozy warmth over here in Canada! The patterns below are all crocheted with a yarn that has a #5 or #6 weight. Don’t worry if you don’t have the exact yarn that is used in these patterns, simply take a look at your yarn label and find a yarn with a number to match! For example, several of these patterns are made using the Tea Cakes by Yarnspirations. You may not have some on hand, but you can substitute the yarn for your favourite super bulky weight such as a Bernat Softee Chunky or Lion Brand Thick and Quick.
1. The Ginger Spice Slouch Winter Hat
This was by far my most popular hat pattern last year! Made With a Caron Tea Cake and an 8mm or 10mm crochet hook (You may need to adjust the hook size to obtain the correct gauge), this pattern includes a free video tutorial! Be sure to check out the matching cowl and fingerless gloves patterns!

2. The Winter Cranberry Headband/Ear Warmer
This headband is double thick for extra warmth during the colder months. First worked in two pieces, the two side are then crocheted together. Here you will also find a cozy mittens pattern to match!

3. At the Woods Slouch, Beanie and Messy Bun Winter Hat
This hat is seamless and features some great texture! The pattern includes the variations for the slouch, beanie and messy bun hat versions. Be sure to check out the crochet pattern for the matching triangle scarf!

4. Paired Up Toque
This hat pattern was originally released as a messy bun hat pattern (two of the messy bun hats can be made from one Caron Cake!) but was modified to include a full beanie pattern later in the year. It is one of my favourite worsted weight hat patterns!

5. Snowy Day Toque, Messy Bun and Slouch Winter Hat
We had a lot of really snowy days last year! Part way through the winter season I decided to freshen up my winter accessories and this hat pattern was born! It reminds me of the snow mobile trails that run through the farmer’s fields around my house! This pattern includes the variations for the Slouch, Beanie and Messy Bun Hat versions.

6. Diamond in the Rough Headband/Ear Warmer
**NEW THIS YEAR!** Another double thick headband or ear warmer made with a worsted weight yarn. It features some great texture and features a free video tutorial!

7. Maple Leaf Toque
Last year I decided to play around with some colour a little bit! I was also wrapped up in some national pride as we cheered on our Canadian Olympians at the Winter Olympics! The next few hats each feature some colour work and are worked in one of my favourite stitches: The knit Stitch (But it’s crochet!)

8. Canada Toque
Another Olympic inspired favourite! This hat is made with a worsted weight yarn and features a chart to help you with the colour changes.

9. Shamrock Toque
Celebrating a little Irish (Or perhaps the Greek soccer league I am told!)? This hat features a double thick brim and is made with worsted weight yarn. Like the two above it includes a chart to help you with the colour changes and is worked in the knit stitch.

10. Children’s Textured Slouch and Beanie Winter Hat:
When my kids needed some new winter hats mid season I turned to my yarn stash and crochet hooks. These hats are made with a super bulky weight yarn. The crochet pattern includes the instruction for five sizes! Be sure to check out the matching cowl pattern and mittens!

Hi Sarah! I must say the photo captured my interest enough to want to see more! This is my first time on your site and your patterns are so beautiful! Already I have picked a couple for my grandchildren, I just need to head over to Michael’s for some yarn (our walmart really sucks with its yarn choices!). Or maybe I could find two #4 weights to use together somewhere in my yarn stash!
