Hello and welcome to Learn to Crochet with RTC! Today we will learn how to make a double crochet stitch – or “dc.”
If you have been following Learn to Crochet here on Rich Textures Crochet, you will now have learned various things about yarn (All About Yarn) and hooks (All about Crochet hooks, Needles and Notions), and how to hold them. You will also know how to make a slip knot (How to make a slip knot), a foundation chain (How to Make a Chain Stitch), a single crochet (sc) stitch (How to make a Single Crochet) and a half double crochet (hdc)stitch (How to make a Half Double Crochet). Today we will learn how to make a double crochet stitch.
You may have noticed by now that our stitches are slowly getting taller. If you take a moment to compare the single crochet stitch and the half double crochet stitch, you will see that the half double crochet stitch is slightly taller than the single crochet. The double crochet stitch is taller yet again.
When written in a crochet pattern the double crochet stitch will often be abbreviated as “dc.”
For example, in a written crochet pattern you may see something like “dc in each of the next 5 sts.” This means that you will make one double crochet stitch in each of the next five stitches.
Let’s take a closer look at how the double crochet stitch is made. Following this photo tutorial, you will also find a free video tutorial.
In order to make a double crochet stitch, you will need to have a foundation chain or stitch below to work in (If you are unsure of how to make a foundation chain, please check out the other tutorials linked above).
For this tutorial, I will begin by making a foundation chain of 12 chains.
After you have made your foundation chain, proceed as follows:
Step One: Yarn over (bring your yarn over the top of your hook), insert your hook in the fourth chain from your hook (I like to work in the back bumps of the chain. You will insert your hook from the front to the back):
Step Two: Yarn over (place your yarn over your hook), pull the yarn through the chain stitch pulling up another loop on your hook. You will now have three loops on your hook:
Step Three: Yarn over, pull the yarn through only two of the loops on your hook. You will be left with two loops on your hook:
Step Four: Yarn over once again, pull the yarn through the remaining two loops on your hook. You will be left with one hook left on your hook. One double crochet stitch made:
Now repeat steps one to four working in the next chain along your foundation chain and in each of the following chains.
After coming to the end of your row of chains, you will want to work another row on top of the ones just made. To do this you will chain three stitches and turn your work:
You will then work the next double crochet in the top of the next stitch, following steps one to four as before:
