It seems that crochet tote bags are every where these days! Are you looking for one to show off a little Canadian Pride while out and about this summer? Look no further!
I love a handy tote bag! They are great for making a quick trip to the grocery store, or while running errands. They are convenient for throwing a few things in as you head out the door to the beach or park. Worked in the Canadian colours of red and white this bag makes a great accessory for those Canada Day Celebrations.
It is simple, worked primarily in single crochet stitches, and uses a little bit of colour work in order to create a maple leaf on the front. A colour chart is provided to help show you where the colour changes are in the pattern.

Yarn: Lily Sugar n’ Cream Big Ball Yarn by Yarnspirations™ (100% Cotton; 710 yds/650 m/400 g); Medium/ Worsted weight. Main Color: 1 Ball White. Lily Sugar n’ Cream super size yarn by Yarnspirations™ (100% Cotton; 200 yds/4 oz/184 m/113 g); Medium/ Worsted weight. Contrasting Color: 2 Balls red.
Hook: Size H/8 (5mm). Adjust hook size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.
Notions: Yarn Needle.
Finished Size: Laid Flat 15 inches wide, 14 inches tall.

Pattern Notes:
– Pattern is written in American English terms.
– Ch 1 at beg of rnd does not count as sc.
– Weave in ends as needed.
– When alternate color is not in use, carry nonworking color behind and work over
unless otherwise stated.
– To switch colors, use color for next stitch in the last step of current stitch (i.e. when
completing a sc, instead of yarning over with your BC to pull through last 2 loops on
hook, drop your MC yarn and pick up your CC, yarn over with CC and pull through
last two loops on hook. Before beginning your next stitch in your CC make sure to
bring your MC yarn to the backside of your work.
– **Designers Tip – Feel free to add your own artistic flare – line the bag with fabric or
add your own embellishments!

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (51 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across. Turn.
Rows 3-20: Repeat Row 2.
Row 21: Ch 1, sc in next 25 sts, with CC sc in next st, with MC sc to end. Turn.
Rows 22-24: Repeat Row 21.

To crochet bag together, hold right sides of bag together and join MC in top left corner with a sl st. Working through both thicknesses sc in each st down the side, across the bottom and up the other side working 3 sc in the two corners. Fasten off.
Turn bag right side out.
Top Edge (worked in rnds):
Join MC with a sl st at seam of top right side of bag then work as follows:
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to first sc.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, (now working left to right for the reverse single crochet) rsc in 7 sc, ch 50, sk the next 36 sc and sl st in the next st. Now turning work to work along the handle, sc in each st across (50 sc), sl st in the next st on bag body, turn, sc in each st across handle, sl st in next sc on bag body, turn, sc in each st across handle, sl st in next sc on bag body.
Now turn bag so that you are once again working along the top edge of the bag and continue to rsc in each st between the handle straps. When you reach the next handle sl st across, then rsc in the next 14 sts.
(To work second handle) Ch 50, sk the next 36 sc and sl st in the next st. Now turning work to work along the handle, sc in each st across (50 sc), sl st in the next st on bag body, turn, sc in each st across handle, sl st in next sc on bag body, turn, sc in each st across handle, sl st in next sc on bag body.
Now turn bag so that you are once again working along the top edge of the bag and continue to rsc in each st between the handle straps. When you reach the next handle sl st across, then rsc to the end. Join with a sl st in the first rsc.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
