Who else fell in love with this year’s Olympic Hats?

I’m not usually one who likes to watch sports on TV. Unless it’s my kids soccer games, I don’t watch it much at all (although I did love and play floor hockey, and enjoy going to a Raptors game or a Blue Jays game when I lived in Toronto during my university years!).

But when it comes to the Olympics, I love watching! I become a thrill seeking snow board and alpine skiing enthusiast. I can identify difficult twists and turns in the ice dance program. And I shout at the screen during the curling and hockey matches.

The Olympics has a way of bringing out this unusual love of sports in me. And I am sure I am not alone.

The other thing that the Olympics is very good at doing, is bringing people together. All of a sudden we all have something in common. Something to talk about while standing in line at the grocery store, while pumping gas at the gas station, or while waiting for your hair dye to set at the hair salon.

This year, along with the amazing talent of the Olympic competitor’s, those of us in the crafting world were drawn to this year’s selection of knit hats! I, like so many other’s, after seeing these knit hats being worn throughout the events, set out to make a crochet version.

Earlier this season I completed my Maple Leaf Toque (the pattern of which can be found HERE). Now I am happy to bring you the crochet pattern for the “Canada Toque.”

Don’t we look proud to be Canadian? 😉

The new Canada Toque is done in the same style and stitch as the Maple Leaf Toque. It is made with a worsted weight yarn (I used Bernat Premium by Yarnspirations) and a 6mm crochet hook. Under the pattern I’ve provided tips on how to adjust the size should you like it larger.

The hat is worked in one piece (excluding the Pom-Pom), and the brim is double thick making it great for our Canadian Winters.

As always, if you would like to purchase a PDF version of this pattern ($2.50 CAD) or you would like to save it to your Etsy favourites and Ravelry Library, you may do so here:

I hope you enjoy the Canada Toque! Thank you for supporting Rich Textures Crochet!

Happy Crocheting!

Pattern Notes:

– Pattern is written in American English terms.

– Pattern is worked in rounds.

– Join not join at the end of a round unless otherwise stated. Instead use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch and move it up as your work progresses.

– Weave in ends as needed.

– All rounds are worked with the right side facing.

– For the hat brim, when working through both thickness, at the front of the hat you will work as you would through the knit stitch, then pick up the corresponding stitch of the foundation row now on the inside of the hat, working through the top loops you would normally work through for an sc.

– While working the graph, you may crochet over the non-working yarn, or carry it behind your work.

– The knit stitch does not have a lot of stretch. If you would like a larger brim for your hat, increase your starting chain by the number needed to reach the required circumference. Then for each extra ch st, increase the stitch counts at the back of the hat, between the last and first letters “C” and “A.” The rest of the pattern will remain the same.

Pattern:

With colour A, ch 65. Being careful not to twist chain, join with a sl st in the first chain.

Rnd 1: Working in the back bumps of chain, ch 1, loosely sc in each ch around. Do not join. (65 sts)

Rnd 2: Ks in the first st (mark this st), ks in each st around. Do not join. (65 sts)

Rnds 3-13: Ks in each st around (moving stitch marker as work progresses). Do not Join until last round at which time you will join with a sl st. (65 sts)

Rnd 14: Working blo, ch 1, sc in each st around. Do not join. (65 sts)

Rnds 15-22: Ks in each st around. Join colour B in the last st. Do not join (moving stitch marker as work progresses). (65 sts)

**Note: You may begin following the charted design here. The written instructions below for the first three rows of the chart include additional information.**

Rnd 23: With colour B, ks in each st around. Join colour C in the last st. Do not join. (65 sts)

Rnd 24: With colour C, ks in each st around. Join colour A in the last st. Do not join. (65 sts)

Rnd 25: With colour A, ks in each st around. Do not join. (65 sts)

Rnd 26: Where you worked in the blo (Rnd 14), fold fabric under to the inside of the hat. This will become your double thick brim. For round 25 work ks through both thickness, this includes the foundation row that has now been turned under for the hat brim – see pattern notes. Join colour B in last st. Do not join. (65 sts)

For rounds 27-45, continue working the graph below. You will continue on rnd 27 on the bottom right hand side. Work the horizontal rows (working right to left), each colour block representing one knit stitch in the colour shown. When you reach the end of the row on the graph, simply begin again on the right side of the graph. Remember to move your stitch marker up each row as your work progresses.

Once you have finished working the chart, you will proceed as follows:

Rnds 46-48: With colour B, ks in each st around. Do not join. (65 sts)

Decrease Rounds:

Rnd 49: * Ks in the next 6 sts, ks2tog. Rpt from * around, ks in the last st. Do not join. (57 sts)

Rnd 50: * Ks in the next 5 sts, ks2tog. Rpt from * around, ks in the last st. Do not join. (49 sts)

Rnd 51: * Ks in the next 4 sts, ks2tog. Rpt from * around, ks in the last st. Do not join. (41 sts)

Rnd 52: * Ks in the next 3 sts, ks2tog. Rpt from * around, ks in the last st. Do not join. (33 sts)

Rnd 53: * Ks in the next 2 sts, ks2tog. Rpt from * around, ks in the last st. Do not join. (25 sts)

Rnd 54: * Ks in the next st, ks2tog. Rpt from * around, ks in the last st. (17 sts)

Rnd 55: Ks2tog in each st around to last st, ks in final st. Join with a sl st. (9 sts)

Fasten off leaving a long tail. Use this tail to sew the top of the hat closed. Optional: Using the colours used in the hat, make a Pom Pom and attach it to the top.
