Introducing the At the Woods Slouch Hat, a free crochet pattern!
Now that you’ve seen the At the Woods Triangle Scarf (missed it? Find it here), and the At the Woods Messy Bun/Beanie hat (missed it? Find it here), it’s time to introduce you to the At the Woods Slouch hat!
This year I fell in love with the slouch hat! So in designing this set I wanted to make sure that one was available.
Like the Messy Bun hat and the Beanie hat, the Slouch is seamless. It’s made using simple crochet stitches and because it features a super bulky weight yarn, it works up quite quickly. I/m sure you’ll fall in love with it as much as I have.
For this project you will need, one Caron Tea Cake, or about 200 yards of your favourite super bulky weight yarn. You’ll also need an 8mm crochet hook and a stitch marker. The stitch marker you will use to mark the first stitch of each round so you don’t get lost!

Skill Level: Easy
Gauge: 10 sc x 8 rows = 4 inches
Finished Size (Not including pompom): 11 inches tall, 21 inches circumference
Yarn: 1 Caron Tea Cake by Yarnspirations™ (80% Acrylic, 20% Wool; 8.5 oz, 240 g; Approx 204 yds, 186 m). Super Bulky (6). Colour: English Breakfast.
**alternative yarn: Bernat Softee Chunky by Yarnspirations™. About 200 yards. (%100 Acrylic)
Hook: Size L (8 mm) Hook. Adjust hook size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.
Notions: Yarn Needle, stitch marker.
Stitches and Abbreviations:
Ch – Chain
Hdc – Half Double Crochet
Hdc2tog – Half double Crochet two together (yo, insert hook in st indicated and draw up a loop (3 loops on hook). Yo insert hook in next st and draw up a loop (5 loops on hook). Yo and pull through all five loops on hook. Hdc2tog made.
Rpt – Repeat
Sc – Single Crochet
Sk – Skip
Sl st – Slip stitch
Yo – Yarn over
Pattern Notes:
- Pattern is written in American English terms.
- Pattern is worked in continuous rounds, except for the brim (You do not join at the end of each round) and worked from the bottom up. Use a stitch marker to make the first stitch and move up as work progresses.
- Ch 1 at beginning of row does not count as sc or hdc.
- Weave in ends as needed.
Pattern:
Hat Brim (worked in rows):
Ch 6.
Row 1: 1 sc in the second ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, working in the back loop only, sc in each sc across. Turn. (5 sts)
Rows 3-36: Repeat row 2 for 34 more rows. Do not turn, do not fasten off.
Now you are going to sew the two ends of your brim together. Being careful not to twist, holding both ends of the brim together and working through both thickness, place in sc across (5 sts). Do not fasten off.
Turn work so that you are now working around the edge of the brim of the hat. Please continue as follows, working in rounds:
Rnd 1: With right side facing, hdc 45 evenly around. Do not join. (45 sts)
Rnd 2: Now working in the 3rd loop, simply jump up to the first stitch of the next round (pull your yarn a little tighter to close the gap, mark this stitch), in the 3rd loop hdc in each st around. Do not Join. (45 sts)
Rnds 3-11 – Repeat rnd 2 remembering to move stitch marker up as work progresses.
Rnd 12: * Hdc 7, hdc2tog. Repeat from * round. (40 sts)
Rnd 13: * Hdc 6, hdc2tog. Repeat from * round. (35 sts)
Rnd 12: * Hdc 5, hdc2tog. Repeat from * round. (30 sts)
Rnd 13: * Hdc 4, hdc2tog. Repeat from * around. (25 sts)
Rnd 14: * Hdc 3, hdc2tog. Repeat from * around. (20 sts)
Rnd 15: * hdc 2, hdc2tog. Repeat from * around. (15 sts)
Rnd 16: * hdc 1, hdc2tog. Repeat from * around. (10 sts)
Fasten off leaving a long tail. Sew top of hat closed. Weave in ends. Optional: Make and fasten pompom to the top.

When you are looking at your work from the back, the third loop is the horizontal loop in the back of the hdc. There are lots of great tutorials on the third loop online, or if you search on YouTube for the “Ginger Spice Slouch Hat” I explain the third loop in that tutorial.
Why are rnds 12&13 repeated twice? Is this a typo, or intentional? since they are reducing the hdc for eac rnd.
They are repeated to give the hat a bit more Slouch 🙂
