The Winter Cottage Throw

After finishing this blanket a little while ago, it quickly became my go to reading blanket. Even while I was working on it, once the WIP (work in progress) got large enough, I enjoyed the warmth working under it. My daughter would also come a sit beside me, also curling up under its weight.

About the Design:

The blanket has great drape. It has great weight, texture and a classic style. It is a simple and clean enough design so that you can put it down and pick up again without worrying about losing your place in the pattern.

The Yarn:

For this design I used 10 Caron Sprinkle Cakes. They are a super bulky weight (6) yarn with a wool/acrylic blend yarn and a tweed look and are available at Michaels Stores. I love the wool blends for their warmth and breathability (wool also repels moisture).

If you are unable to find the Caron Sprinkle Cakes, you may substitute this yarn for any Super Bulky Weight Yarn such as this Wool-Ease Thick and Quick yarn by Lion Brand.

Crochet blanket in the waistcoat stitch

I used a 10 mm hook which allowed me to keep a looser tension while working with a dense stitch. I finished off the design adding a great tassel fringe to both ends.

Stitches and Abbreviations:

Ch – Chain
KS – knit stitch (aka Waistcoat stitch): The knit stitch is a single crochet worked through the middle of the single crochet or knit stitch of the previous round.  Because you are working your stitch through the middle of the stitch in the previous round (instead of through the top of the stitch) and pulling your loop up through the center, a knit look is created. For further assistance, please see the video tutorial below.
Rpt – Repeat
Sc – Single Crochet
Sk – Skip
Sl st – Slip stitch
Yo – Yarn over

Pattern Notes:

– Pattern is written in American English terms.
– Pattern is worked in rows.
– Ch 1 at beg of rnd does not count as sc.
– Weave in ends as needed.

Pattern:

Ch 86.
Row 1: Sc in the second ch from hook and in each ch each ch across. Turn. (85 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, ks in each stitch across including the final turning chain. Turn. (85 ks)

Continue to repeat row 2 until Throw reaches 65 inches or the desired length. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Video tutorial:

To make Tassels:

Cut 16 in lengths of yarn. I used two strands of yarn for each tassel.

Place tassels along the two ends of the throw beginning in the first stitch and then continuing in every second stitch. Once all tassels are attached, trim tassels to make an even fringe.

  1. Love it looks so cozy & warm ,thank you for the pattern!

  2. Your blanket is so beautiful and comfortable looking! And nice and simple. I was just wondering what your finished size was? In your info section before the pattern the size is blank. You do say you worked it to about 65 inches in length but don’t say how wide it is. Thanks so much!

  3. Lovely blanket! You said you used a P/10 mm hook but my 10 mm hook is an N. Can you clarify? Can’t wait to start this blanket!

Just use your hook marked as a 10mm regardless of the letter as the letters sometimes vary 🙂

  5. Shannon Utz says:

Just wondering if you have tried to wash and/or dry this blanket. I see the yarn says hand wash only… would a gentle cycle be ok?
